Tomorrow, March 21, marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

At the MRHA, we recognize that racism, both systemic and individual, continues to impact the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

As a healthcare organization, we are committed to fostering an environment where all staff, medical staff, patients, and community members feel safe, respected, and valued.

This means continuing to listen, learn, and take meaningful action to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging across our hospitals and services.

Eliminating racial discrimination is not the work of one day, it requires ongoing commitment from all of us.

Today, and every day, we stand together in support of a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.

🌸 International Women’s Day | March 8 🌸

Today we celebrate the incredible women who serve our communities as part of the Lanark County Paramedic Service.

Women represent 43% of our service, contributing across every area of our organization. From Primary and Advanced Care Paramedics on the frontline, to preceptors mentoring the next generation, to Community Paramedics and Outreach teams supporting vulnerable populations, women play a vital role in the care we provide across Lanark County.

Women also contribute through administrative roles, peer support, labour-management and union representation, Superintendent positions, and other leadership roles, helping strengthen the care and support we provide to our communities.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme reminds us that we can all play a role in advancing women and girls.

As individuals, we can support advancement by:
• Calling out stereotypes
• Challenging discrimination
• Questioning bias
• Celebrating women’s achievements
• Sharing knowledge and encouragement with others

At LCPS, we see this every day through mentorship, teamwork, and a shared commitment to supporting one another.

To the women who serve our communities — on the road, behind the scenes, and in leadership — thank you for the dedication, compassion, and expertise you bring to our service and our community.

💜 Happy International Women’s Day.

Recognizing International Women’s Day – March 8 🌺

This Sunday, March 8, we recognize International Women’s Day and celebrate the incredible women who help make care possible across the Mississippi River Health Alliance.

Across Almonte General Hospital, Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital, Fairview Manor, and Lanark County Paramedic Service, women make up the majority of our workforce. Every day, they bring skill, compassion, leadership, and dedication to their work helping ensure safe, high-quality care for the patients, residents, and communities we are proud to serve across Lanark County.

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women while recognizing the importance of continuing to advance equity and opportunity for women everywhere.

We thank the many women across the MRHA whose contributions strengthen our teams, our care, and our community.

✨ MRHA Black History Month Spotlight ✨

As Black History Month comes to a close, we are honoured to share our final spotlight, featuring Sophie Prescott, Development & Event Officer with the Almonte General Hospital Fairview Manor Foundation.

When Sophie found out she was pregnant with her first child in 2013, she had just moved to Clayton, Ontario. She was excited, but also nervous. She hadn’t seen anyone who looked like her in town and wondered how she would be received when seeking care.

Her experience at the Almonte General Hospital Obstetrics Unit was one of love, respect, and compassion.

“Both of my beautiful boys were born at the AGH, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m so grateful that two of the most important medical experiences of my life happened in safe and respectful places. Not everyone gets to say that, and I am very aware of this privilege.”

Sophie also reflects on a broader reality. A report from The Black Women’s Institute for Health found that 42% of Black women surveyed had delayed or avoided seeking care due to concerns about how they would be treated.

“Not all Black stories are the same. Not all Black experiences are the same. Sharing stories isn’t easy, but it is important.”

As we conclude this year’s Black History Month spotlights, we extend our sincere thanks to the staff who shared their voices and experiences. While February provides a dedicated time for reflection, our commitment to equity, belonging, and respectful care continues throughout the year.

Thank you, Sophie, for your leadership, honesty, and for choosing to share your story.

✨ MRHA Black History Month Spotlight ✨

This Black History Month, we are proud to spotlight Rudy Dolo-Cooper, Integrated Clinical Informatics Coordinator.

For Rudy, Black History Month is a time to celebrate the voices, legacies, and contributions of Black people across communities, industries, and spaces.

Reflecting on his experience at the MRHA, Rudy shares:

“In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve seen MRHA take meaningful, proactive steps to create an inclusive environment. What’s mattered most is that I’ve never felt out of place.”

That sense of belonging makes all the difference.

Thank you, Rudy, for your leadership and for the important work you do in supporting clinical teams and strengthening systems across the MRHA.

Janice Steele was happy to nominate Melanie Vermeersch, Community Paramedicine Administrative Assistant, for a Guardian Angel pin.

"While Melanie may not provide hands-on clinical care, the impact she has on patients and families is every bit as meaningful.

Melanie is often the first reassuring voice our clients hear when they are unsure where to turn. She listens with genuine empathy, validates their concerns, and helps them navigate a complex health-care and community-support system that can feel overwhelming. Her compassion alone brings comfort, but her advocacy goes even further.

There are countless examples where Melanie has fought tirelessly on behalf of patients and their families - coordinating services, pushing for increased support in the home, and ensuring that no one falls through the cracks. She consistently goes above and beyond to smooth pathways, remove barriers, and make sure that people receive the care and dignity they deserve.

Melanie’s dedication, kindness, and unwavering commitment make a meaningful difference for everyone she supports. She embodies the spirit of a Guardian Angel, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition."
