In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honoured Indigenous stories, past and present, as we unveiled a permanent land acknowledgement stone on the Diefenbunker grounds. The installation reflects that the Diefenbunker sits on the unsurrendered and unceded traditional territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation and affirms the museum's ongoing commitment to truth, reconciliation, and the respectful representation of Indigenous histories and perspectives.
This unveiling was followed by a moving ceremony hosted by Makatew, welcoming community members, school groups, and representatives from all levels of government to honour Residential School Survivors, the children who never returned, and the families and communities who continue to be affected. Through prayer, song and dance, stories, and reflections, we acknowledged the resilience of Survivors and were reminded of the work that still lies ahead.
