It’s estimated that 1 in 5 kids are subjected to bullying in person or online. Bullying can severely impact a child’s mental, emotional, and physical health.

Whether you’re a parent or guardian, teacher or sports coach, find information and support for bullied youths from BullyingCanada: https://www.bullyingcanada.ca/what-is-bullying

When you have a cold, sipping a mug of hot tea can help keep you hydrated, clear congestion, and soothe a sore throat. Plus, a warm "cuppa" on a cold day just feels good! Even just adding a spoonful of honey can help calm your cough!

There’s no way around it, back acne (aka “bacne”) isn’t fun. It can be stubborn and uncomfortable, and can also appear in other places, like on the chest, upper arms, and buttocks.

Body breakouts are mainly caused by overactive oil glands, excess dead skin cells, and bacteria. You can prevent pimples on your body by wearing loose clothing, showering after exercise, and using non-comedogenic body care products (which won’t clog pores).

Over-the-counter treatments can help with mild breakouts. Ask our pharmacist to walk you through the options, from body washes to creams and much more.

Sneezing, an itchy nose, and red, watery eyes are all classic signs of allergic rhinitis (also known as “hay fever”). Symptoms develop when your body’s immune system reacts to an irritant in the air, like tree pollen, pet dander or mold spores.

You can’t prevent hay fever, but you can take steps to minimize your allergy symptoms.
• Avoid touching your face or rubbing your nose and eyes.
• Keep your windows closed on days when pollen counts are high even throughout the fall months.
• Use filters in your vacuum and air conditioner.
• Wash your hands often, especially after playing with pets.

The seasonal changes at this time of year can often impact our mental health. It is important to keep mental health top of mind and be able to identify whether you are experiencing moments of sadness or depression.

Is it sadness or depression?

Sadness is a normal reaction to difficult situations such as loss or disappointment. Feeling sad at times is just another part of being human – and feelings of sadness go away quickly

Depression is a common condition characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities. Depression can disturb sleep, disrupt appetite, and lead to fatigue. It often surfaces for no reason and lasts for a much longer period.

If you are feeling uncertain, check out this blog post on how to distinguish between depression and sadness, from someone who’s been there: https://www.tevacanada.com/en/canada/life-effects/depression-and-sadness/

Stress can impact your physical health, thoughts, and feelings. Left unchecked, high stress can contribute to a range of health problems, from high blood pressure to diabetes and depression.

Health, housing, and work are three of the most common stressors amongst most adults. With as many as 74 percent of people reporting an inability to fully cope, stress management is more important than ever.

Conjunctivitis (or “pink eye”) is an irritation and swelling of the eye. It’s one of the most common eye infections in children and adults and can be caused by a few different culprits:

If it’s caused by allergies… both eyes are likely to be red and itchy.

If it’s caused by a virus… eyes may not be itchy, but very watery and have a feeling like there’s something in the eye.

If it’s caused by bacteria… one or both eyes may have crusty or sticky eyelids, particularly first thing in the morning.

If you suspect that you or your child has pink eye, our pharmacist can help determine the cause of the eye irritation and discuss your treatment options.

A fever, dry cough, sore throat, and fatigue are common symptoms of the flu. And we know they can make you feel awful. But, if you are otherwise in good health, not pregnant and younger than age 65, you are at low risk of complications and should feel better within a week.

It’s very important we all do our part in stopping the spread of the virus that causes the flu! If you or your child have the flu, be sure to stay home from work, school, and other public places, for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medication.

Keep your little ones safe this Halloween – and have fun on the spookiest night of the year by planning ahead and following a few golden rules:
• Give each child a flashlight to carry to make them more visible to cars and other pedestrians and encourage them to always cross at the corner.
• Let kids draw or design the jack-o-lantern, then have an adult carve it.
• Choose costumes that are fitted (which don’t pose a tripping hazard) and use makeup instead of masks, so they don’t interfere with your child’s vision or breathing.
