"Stay safe always." ~ Brad Wood Photography
Ice fishing has started on the Grande River in Dunnville. I was taking my images, safely from the bridge! I think that they are usually first to venture out on the ice each season.
Always test ice thicknesses yourself before venturing on any ice, Conditions can change with every step so use extreme caution, especially over moving water!
It is recommended that you have at least 15cm (6") of good strong ice before you walk on it. Good, strong ice is formed at temperatures below -8C (17.6 F) and can be recognised by it being clear and blue. White ice (mixed with snow and formed at higher temperatures), typically will support half the weight of good strong ice. Grey, opaque ice is usually saturated with water and is dangerous to approach at any time. Be aware of changing water levels as ice is only strong when it is supported by the water. If water levels drop, ice can be suspended or broken along shorelines.
The temperature has only been below -8C since Thursday evening, and will be back above freezing on Monday. Warm weather next week will erode ice conditions very rapidly.
Stay Safe Always!
