A Baker’s cyst (popliteal cyst) is caused by the overproduction of synovial fluid in the knee joint, which builds up and pushes into a sac behind the knee. This excess fluid, often a reaction to inflammation, is triggered by underlying knee damage, most commonly arthritis (osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis) or injuries like a meniscus tear.
