Transport Canada

We are unlikely to be able to accomodate any Transport Canada medicals in October, and will be limited in November. If you require a Transport Canada medical:

1. We suggest you book now, and ideally come in September if possible
2. Please be aware we are implementing a $50 fee for "no-shows" as this is becoming a major problem.

Dr. Graham will be taking vacation in October/November. We suspect appointments will be very booked up over the next couple of months and encourage people to book now, and come in a little earlier for checkups/medication renewals. Thank you.

Our office is delighted to welcome Dr. Colette Osmond to our practice for the next several months. Dr. Osmond is a local of the area, completed her medical school training at MUN, and has lived in Alberta/BC for numerous years. We’re delighted to welcome her back as a second year Family Practice Resident. She will be working in the clinics of Dr. Graham and the other physicians, as well as caring for patients at the Dr. Charles LeGrow Health Centre.

She will have her own list booked independently of the staff physicians but will only be seeing existing patients of our practices. Unfortunately we are unable to take new patients at this time. Anyone without a family physician or NP needs to register with Patient Connect NL.

The RNC is warning the public of a dangerous drug known as phenazolam, detected in a pill sold on the illicit market.

Through laboratory testing of substances connected to a sudden death in March on the Northeast Avalon, Health Canada has confirmed that a pill presenting as xanax is actually phenazolam. The benzodiazepine is not approved for medical use in Canada and can lead to serious adverse effects, including death, especially when taken with opioids such as fentanyl.

There are significant concerns with regards to combinations of benzodiazepines (benzos), such as phenazolam, with opioids, also known as benzo-dope. Taking benzos and opioids together increases the risk of overdose and death. Naloxone, which is commonly used to counteract the effects of opioids and prevent overdose, has no effect in combatting the adverse effects of benzos.

The RNC recommends that people who are using street drugs:

• Be aware that phenazolam is in the province and could be in street drugs without your knowledge. Avoid benzo-dope.
• Do not use drugs alone. Leave your door unlocked and tell someone to check on you.
• Do testers to check drug strength. Begin with a small amount, use less and pace yourself.
• Have naloxone on hand; it will not help with phenazolam, but could help with opioids such as fentanyl.
• Talk with a health-care provider about reducing risk.

If you or someone you know is experiencing the symptoms of a drug overdose call 911 immediately. The Good Samaritan Act protects those experiencing a drug overdose or anyone present during an overdose from charges of possession when they call for emergency help.
