BIG NEWS!

We are thrilled to announce that Coastline Counselling will be welcoming a highly capable addition to the team in January. Please join us in introducing Shirley Anne Cameron (she/her), our practicum student for 2025!

Shirley has successfully completed the coursework for her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and is eager to begin her counselling internship. She can be described as equal parts head and heart—tenacious, hardworking, intelligent, and dedicated to everything she sets her mind to. However, her intellect is just one part of what she brings to the table. Shirley also has an innate ability to connect with others and leave them feeling truly seen. She prioritizes building a strong sense of safety and acceptance in the therapeutic relationship, always collaborating closely with her clients.

Shirley has had an impressive career in education, where she worked with adolescents and young adults, fostering personal development, life skills, and confidence through experiential opportunities. You may recognize Shirley from her time onstage performing or in the pit orchestrating. She is a trained and celebrated singer, a recognized choir director, and an acclaimed conductor. Through her many skill sets, Shirley has experienced firsthand the relationship between music and mental health, offering a unique, holistic perspective on fostering well-being.

Coastline is exceptionally fortunate to host her for her practicum. Shirley will be offering low-cost therapy and will begin seeing clients in February. If you’re interested in working with Shirley, please email brianne@coastlinecounselling.ca.

Welcome aboard, Shirley!

The kids are back in school, and that includes little Buoy, Coastline Counselling’s therapy dog prospect! Buoy is a 2-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi who has been training as a therapy dog with the wonderful .dogs. The presence of a therapy dog in the office not only enhances the warm welcome to the space but is also supported by scientific research. Interacting with animals can lower blood pressure, improve client engagement, assist with emotion regulation and grounding techniques, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Today marks Buoy’s first day in the office, and it was a great start! A big thank you to everyone who helped her acclimate to the space and the work. While she still has some training ahead before she becomes a regular fixture, I look forward to introducing her to clients interested in her services! 🦊🛟

Coastline Counselling turns 1 today! ✨

Words fail to describe how meaningful this year has been. I want to take this opportunity to thank all my past and present clients. I am humbled to have earned your trust and been invited into your wellness journey. Counselling sessions can be heavy and emotional, but they can be equally joyous. I feel fortunate to bear witness to your laughter and your tears. You have, and will continue to teach me so much. Thank you for the chance to do what I love. I do not take it for granted.

Here is to another big year of growth, education, and intentional efforts to increase mental health services to Islanders seeking healing. 🌿

It can be confusing when you finally have it “together” - a good job, financial security, hobbies that you enjoy, and healthy, reciprocal relationships, then trauma rears its head once more. No, this does not confirm that “people like me just don’t get to be happy”. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Trauma response does not know the clock or the calendar, so it can pop in when you least expect it. Sudden reemergence of old traumatic memories, physical sensations, panic response, and grief can actually be an indicator that your system is finally ready to heal on a deeper level. For proper trauma processing to happen, you need safety, security, and stability in your life, not only in the perceived sense but on a cellular level.

So no, this does not make you crazy, it makes you ready. You are now strong enough to let yourself be vulnerable. There is readiness for change, healing, and letting go of the stories that no longer serve you. If this speaks to you, please reach out, book a consultation, and lets shed some of the old to make way for the new.

Trauma is a term that is part of our vocabulary but we may not have a true understanding of. Some people avoid this term like the plague, while others dabble with it casually to describe daily disappointments or frustrations. Knowledge is power. Greater understanding expands compassion toward self and others. So let’s talk trauma.

Dr. Gabor Maté does a beautiful job of describing trauma as a psychological wounding. It is not the event that happened, but the wound you sustained as a result. And that wound is considerable. The impact of trauma alters your brain function and changes your nervous system. It shifts your concept of self and alters how you show up in the world. Trauma distorts your reality. Recognizing these impacts are essential in order to begin healing and finding your way back to self. Trauma is a wound and like all other scrapes and breaks, your body wants to resolve it. When you understand this, you also understand that trauma therapy is not about taking on the impossible task of changing what happened, but instead shifting our current relationship, understanding, and response to it. And that is more than possible.✨

This applies to grief. This applies to recovery. This applies to processing trauma. This applies to managing depression. This applies to curbing panic response. This applies to developing self-compassion.

We live in an age of instant gratification: food is fast, shipping is same day, bills are paid with a tap, and dates are made with a swipe. We want results and we want them now. These expectations show up in the ways we talk about our mental health as well. There is nothing wrong with seeking quick-fixes, but what I often hear when people comment on their prolonged experience of suffering, is the presence of shame. It is important to emphasize that healing is not an expedited process, it is a journey. Mental health does not know the passing of time, and to shame yourself for how long you have struggled only diminishes the strength it has taken to get you to this point. So, it's okay if it's taking longer than you thought.🤍
