In April 1956 J.A. (Al) MacLellan and John MacDonald, two young Pharmacists, opened a drugstore in downtown Charlottetown. At the time the pharmacy was located on the corner of Pownal and Richmond Streets. This was just a block away from the Charlottetown Hospital and Clinic. Within a few years Al MacLellan became the sole owner, and in 1969 he added a large addition to the drugstore.
With the rapid growth of Charlottetown, a decision was made to relocate to Sherwood. On January 25th, 1979 the business was moved to 21 Brackley Point road, and renamed Sherwood Drug Mart. In 1987, Sherwood Drug Mart moved into a larger space next door and Maid Marian’s Diner later opened in the vacant store.
In May 2009 Sherwood Drug Mart and Maid Marian’s were both destroyed in a devastating fire. Fortunately a location was available across the street for the pharmacy, and the store was able to re-open on a limited basis by the very next day after the fire.
The drugstore reopened in a spacious new building at the old location on January 15th 2010. Sherwood Drug Mart is now owned and operated by Al MacLellan’s son Rob MacLellan who also recently purchased Maid Marian’s Diner with his wife Stephanie Drake in Dec. 2017.
