It may seem strange to think of advocacy and grief going hand-in-hand. On this National Grief & Bereavement Day, we recognize the need to advocate for grief literacy in our communities.

All levels of government, institutions, organizations and businesses need to be mindful of how policy impacts grief and bereavement.

We are committed to lending our voice and being heard to help create a grief literate society.

Today, as we observe National Grief and Bereavement Day, we confront a fundamental truth: grief is universal, yet many Canadians feel alone and unsupported due to a nationwide grief literacy gap.

We call on the government to recognize grief as a public health issue and invest in accessible support programs. Read why Canada needs a government-backed push now: https://loom.ly/7AhrhOM.

It’s “Take Your Kids to Work Day”.

When you are the child of funeral professionals and live near the funeral home, every day seemed like “take your kids to work” day. My early duties included: dusting, emptying garbage, putting the signs together for the visitation rooms (does anyone remember the boards with the little white letters?), and filing.

Although I now bring myself to the funeral home, I consider it a privilege to serve families alongside my father Allison.

Our Story

MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, locally owned and operated by Allison and Gail Swan, has served the Island community for over three-quarters of a century.

Situated on Ole King Square, the funeral home is only minutes away from Province House, the Confederation Centre of the Arts and the beautiful waterfront that is so much a part of the charm of Prince Edward Island’s capital city. The funeral home was founded in the early 1920’s by N.D. MacLean, who was the first licensed embalmer on Prince Edward Island. It is interesting to note that as early as the late 1800’s a funeral home was located on this site.

For a Life Worth Celebrating.
