The value of a visitation and funeral service goes far beyond tradition—they serve important emotional, social, and cultural purposes during one of life’s most difficult times.

Such events create space for remembrance, support, and the first steps toward healing. Even though they can be difficult, many people find them deeply meaningful and important in coping with loss.

It is National Crayon Day 🖍️ Most of us think of the excitement of a new pack of crayons at the start of the school year.

For children who are grieving 💔, drawing can provide a wonderful outlet to express emotions 🎨 and communicate when they might not have the words.

Children will often draw images on their own – sad faces 😢, the person who died, heavy rain clouds 🌧️, what heaven might look like ☁️, etc.

The drawing can serve to open communication with the child, You could ask them what their picture means and how they felt when they were drawing 💭

I dare say, adults like using crayons too 😊🖍️

Although often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences between a casket and a coffin.

Caskets are used in North America, where coffins are more widely used in the UK.

Continuing education isn’t just a requirement for maintaining licensure—it’s a commitment to excellence in service.

For funeral directors and embalmers, staying current with evolving regulations, health and safety standards, and best practices ensures that families receive the highest level of care during some of life’s most difficult moments. Ongoing learning also strengthens professional skills, reinforces ethical standards, and supports public trust in our profession.

By investing in continuing education, we’re not only meeting licensing requirements—we’re honoring our responsibility to serve with knowledge, compassion, and integrity.

Our Story

MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, locally owned and operated by Allison and Gail Swan, has served the Island community for over three-quarters of a century.

Situated on Ole King Square, the funeral home is only minutes away from Province House, the Confederation Centre of the Arts and the beautiful waterfront that is so much a part of the charm of Prince Edward Island’s capital city. The funeral home was founded in the early 1920’s by N.D. MacLean, who was the first licensed embalmer on Prince Edward Island. It is interesting to note that as early as the late 1800’s a funeral home was located on this site.

For a Life Worth Celebrating.
