It's a New Day, a New Dawn; a historic moment on Prince Edward Island. After years of work, the College of Acupuncture of Prince Edward Island launched yesterday. PEI is the sixth Canadian province to regulate acupuncture and the first Maritime province. Within PEI, we are the 16th health profession to become regulated, now on level partnership with the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, optometrists, physiotherapists and so on. Now we enter a demanding 6 months to get this regulatory College fully up and running.

These Times! Up is down. Down is up. Forward is backward. Backward is forward. So much craziness. So much pull to the extremes. Can you hold the center? Are you in contact with the center? How are you handling it all? Are you inhabiting yourself? I can help. My latest blog . . .

April 4, 2025 These are challenging times! . . . .  Beginning with COVID, then through rapid interest rate hikes, multiple wars, and now, of course, so much more so.  Everything seems inside out and upside down.  Uncertainties are amplified.  And almost every day reveals the next wild card. Happy New Year. It's a Sixty year cycle. At last we conclude the year of Yang Wood Dragon Qi. And what a year it has been! This year is the year of Wood Snake Qi. Rest your mind. Allow the ultimate simplicity of things to be unveiled. There are many available prognostications. I have curated for you one of the finest, from colleague, Gregory Done. Come in for an Acupuncture session and an I Ching reading (more on that soon!) to smooth your transition. Enjoy . . . .

Esteemed colleague and teacher of Chinese Medicine, Ann Cecil-Sterman, recently posted this detailed description of the long-term dehydrating impact of coffee; perhaps the best I've ever read . . . so, passing it along . . . “In Chinese medicine we understand that hydration is the cornerstone of health! Without hydration we can’t do all the things our body needs to do to get pathogenic factors out: sneeze, sweat, cough, vomit, urinate, defecate! When we hear the word hydration, we think of water, and while plain flat water is extremely important as a vehicle for elimination from the body, it is not a deep hydrator! For that we think of soups, broths, stews, and porridges! But what also lowers systemic hydrations are the systemic DEhydrators, and one of the most common of those in our culture, is coffee! Coffee is a concentrated, bitter fruit and when you put that data through the lens of this medicine, you find that it is a triple dehydrator! It’s a concentrate; you need a lot of those beans to make a cup! But the body is not geared to digest concentrates! It reads them as toxins, since nearly all toxins in nature are highly concentrated, and it knows it must respond by purging! Second, it’s very bitter! Nearly all toxins are very bitter and so again, a purge is stimulated! Third, it’s a fruit! Fruits act as defensive qi stimulants, which means they clear accumulations from the body! When you put these three factors—concentrated, bitter, fruit—on your tongue at the same time, the brain receives a focussed message to purge and to do it fast! It goes to work, first at the liver whose job it is to process toxins or store them if it can’t keep up with them! The liver releases some of its toxic load to the kidneys to make room for the incoming threat! The kidneys read that event as an emergency and engage the adrenals to speed up the process! This is the super famous coffee high! And what follows is the purge itself—urination and defecation! The purge comes at a price because the body uses its fluids to create the purge and so the net effect of coffee is dehydration! But that’s not all! No! The heat that is generated in the process, which we call wei qi—a subset of yang qi—is hot, and so there is inflammation now in play! And ironically that heat consumes fluids and so the person enters a spiraling dehydrating situation! Then the body has to accumulate dampness—swellings made by waste fluids in the gut—in order to buffer the tissues and the organs from that heat! Over time, the heat and dampness combine and the body tries to hide it in various places including the belt channel and the joints, and when it can’t be contained there any longer, the heat leaks out and consumes the flesh and threatens the organs, forcing the body to create what’s known as substantial dampness—nodules and tumors, in its ingenious quest to defend the organs against decimation through inflammation! Meanwhile, the body is so exhausted from having the adrenal glands artificially stimulated that it chooses to stop releasing the daily magical puff of adrenal that it is supposed to release upon waking, which is nature’s way of making us excited about life, and so we get depressed and drink more coffee! Every day, the thrashing of the adrenal glands chips away at our ability to generate immune responses to pathogens and cold and we become ill, tired, weak and depressed over time! It’s all reversible! Body, mind and spirit thrive with hydrators!”

We are into the darkest time of the year. Daylight hours are near minimum. And to amplify things, we've been under solid continuous cloud cover for weeks with no end in sight. There is a healthy relationship to all of this. Take a moment to read my blog from a few years back and orient yourself to this time of year . . . .https://danielschulman.ca/right-relationship-to-shorter-days-and-the-coming-winter/

It’s my 25th Year in Clinical Practice!
In the Fall of 1996, I packed up and moved from Charlottetown to Boston for a three year program in Acupuncture at the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA). Three years later, in the Spring of 1999, I packed up again and moved back to Charlottetown to establish my clinic. It’s now been 25 years of full-time clinical practice. I’ve served thousands of Islanders with the powerful effective therapeutic offerings of professional acupuncture and moxibustion. My patients have ranged from 3 months to 96 years in age. I’ve helped people to be conceived, and to be born. I’ve helped people to die. And I’ve worked with people through all the life stages in between.
My patients and I have witnessed the impressive effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of anxiety, depression, asthma, colitis, arthritis, allergies, irritable bowel, psoriasis, constipation, back pain, neck pain, jaw pain, shoulder pain, foot pain, sciatica, neuropathy, headaches, premenstrual symptoms, menstrual pain, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, sweating problems, kidney function, gall bladder problems, diabetes, gestational issues, fertility, erectile dysfunction, insomnia, stress management, perimenopausal symptoms, and so many other conditions, ailments and concerns.
Every week, people come for treatment and declare to me, “you’re my last hope. I’ve tried everything else and nothing has worked. My doctor says nothing is wrong. But something is definitely wrong”. Through the truly different lens of Chinese Medicine, we can very often figure it out.
And above and beyond specific symptoms and diseases, my patients and I have experienced how remarkable professional acupuncture is at dealing with the entire person, not as a fragmented set of parts, but truly as a whole physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual being.
The learning did not stop 25 years ago. For the past few years, I have trained in some new and powerfully effective approaches and this year, I’ll be adding even more new offerings in clinic.
Thank You for 25 years of trust and partnership.

The Yin Water Rabbit Year is finally over, with all of it's tunnels, burrows and subterranean caverns in darkness . . . today we emerge into the Yang Wood Dragon, from ultimate Yin into ultimate Yang . . . into the ‘radiant laughter of the Universe’ . . . a welcome shift for sure! Just be careful . . . it may get so bright we lose sight of the many subtle essentials wisdom asks of our attention. May we all bathe in this light with divinely sourced intelligence. I am always here to help you clarify your somatically held patterns of relationship to it all with some excellent acupuncture.

The Yin Water Rabbit Year is finally over and we head into a Yang Wood Dragon Year. I have searched the world hi and lo. And this is the fruit of my curation. This is no superficial tabloid prognostication. Colleague Gregory Done offers us a truly deep dive into what this Yang Wood Dragon year we have just entered, has to offer. Pour yourself a cup of tea and have a read . . . .

Today is the first day of the New Year! Or is it? Yes, it is the ‘Gregorian New Year’. But this is really only a cultural basis for marking a New Year’s passage. Yes, 2024 years ago, the Solar New Year was indeed around January 1st. But since then, it has drifted. And now, depending on how the ecliptic path of the sun is referenced, the Solar New Year is either March 19 (the Tropical Calendar) or April 14 (the Sidereal Calendar).

And then there is the Lunar New Year which, this year, is February 10 . . . also known as Chinese New Year. So today has cultural significance as the beginning of a New Year. But it has no basis in nature.

Chinese Medicine is a medical system that considers our position within nature as central to all things health-related. We are embedded in the cycling of the seasons and the motions of the moon, sun, planets and stars. Changes in these cycles are the changes within which we find ourselves. When the Chinese New Year arrives, I will post links to help you understand the changes underway on February 10, as we leave this Water Rabbit Year and enter a Wood Dragon Year (designations within the 60 year stems and branches cycle).

December has begun. It is supposed to be a time of year of Joy, Celebration, Family, Giving, Receiving and Light. Unfortunately, for many, this month is more of a perfect storm of darkness, unmet expectations, stressed finances and resources, dietary excesses, family tensions and struggles, anxiety, depression and overwhelm. The new acupuncture approach I have been learning, practicing and perfecting for the past four years is remarkably effective at marshalling all of your innate physical, physiological, mental, emotional and spiritual resources to meet and respond to just such a time. Give me a call. Let a few sessions help ease you through this time.
