This wonderful book explores the Jewish ritual traditions around death, loss, grief and bereavement, and presents them in a way that's accessible to people of any spiritual path.

Jewish teachings have great wisdom around how to accept and integrate loss, and the book is a collection of practical exercises for helping your soul adjust to the changes that loss brings. It's perfect for folks experiencing a loss, and for practitioners who support grievers and the bereaved.

When we offer a blessing like this for the dead, we channel the palpable energy of our love and good wishes on their behalf. This energy is real, and it matters. It gives the person who's died the fuel they need to let go of this shore, and to cross the river to the Village of the Ancestors.

On Sunday, I launched my latest course, “Designing a Healing Funeral: How to create a ceremony that fits your values and soothes your soul.”

In honour of that upcoming course, I’m going to focus my posts for the next little while on why a good funeral plays such an important healing function, for both the living and the dead. I hope you find the conversation helpful, and I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

I often meet people who tell me that they don't want a funeral, or that someone they love is dying, and that person doesn't want a funeral.

When people don't want a funeral, I think they are often responding to having been to funerals that left them feeling worse not better. Bad funerals can be hollow, awkward, or not well-suited to the person who they were honoring. And they can feel overwhelming and stressful for a family who is exhausted and grieving.

But it doesn't have to be that way. The problem is not that it’s a funeral, the problem is that it’s a bad funeral. Bad funerals are just funerals that aren’t designed or delivered well.

If you’ve been to a beautiful, meaningful, well-designed funeral and felt how healing and restorative it is, you’ll know what I mean.
