The world is in turmoil right now. News is not uplifting or comforting. Wars are raging and economic uncertainty is causing great concern. We are not able to control what is going on around us but we can take control of how we react to it. Here are some simple methods to calm anxiety anytime/anywhere that won’t cost you a penny.
Practice the “3-3-3 rule”: Identify three things you can see, three things you can hear and three things you can touch.
Progressive muscle relaxation exercises: tense and release different muscle groups in your body, paying attention to how you feel each time. Start with your toes, move upward to your thighs, buttocks, shoulders, arms and fingers and finally, your face.
Engage in gentle physical activity: go for a walk (outdoors if possible), do some stretching or yoga, lie on your back and rock as gently and lazily as you can.
Listen to music and take a break from news and social media: If you are feeling anxious, swap the news and social media updates for some calming music instead. Look for Solfeggio frequencies (174 Hz, 396 Hz, 528 Hz, 741 Hz, and 852 Hz are beneficial) or your favorite music. Ocean sounds are particularly calming.
You can also turn to a friend or family member for support and remember to extend the same grace and compassion to yourself that you would a friend.
