Somatic experiential play therapy is a body-based, trauma informed approach that meets children exactly where they are - not in a chair answering questions, but in their imagination, their stories, and their movement.
Through play, children do the work their words can’t yet do:
* discharging anxiety stored in the body
* completing stress cycles that got stuck
* learning what it feels like to be safe again.
The therapist doesn’t direct the story, they’re tracking the nervous system - watching for shifts in breath, energy, tension and movement - to follow the child’s lead toward healing.
Whether it’s a sword battle that lets a child play out their power, or role play unfolding in the sandbox or doll house - the outcome is always the same: child moving toward regulation, and the therapist left in quiet awe of the brilliance of their nervous system.
