In support of Discovery Week at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Dr. Anjema has been sharing his clinical expertise with visiting first-year medical students from Western University: Maryam Othman, Sinthuja Mahendran and Rihana Kukkadi.

The students ‘shadowed' Dr. Anjema and learned from him as he consulted and treated patients with glaucoma, wet macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, central and branch retina vein occlusion, as well as eyelid cancer. They also watched him perform cataract surgery.

Dr. Anjema said that "I have been teaching medical students, nurses and residents since I started in Chatham. I love seeing their enthusiasm for learning, their commitment to life-long discovery of new ideas, their love for patients, and their desire to be the best physicians that they can be. Teaching future doctors is energizing both for myself and the AEI staff. All of us at AEI appreciate the opportunity to work with our future physicians. We appreciate our partnership with CKHA to provide this learning experience."

Discovery Week originally began as part of a strategy to attract doctors to set up practice in rural and regional locations. According to a recent story in the Chatham News, "Research shows that students begin making career decisions early in their medical school years. Discovery Week is designed to expose students to practicing medicine outside of large urban areas before they make firm plans for their careers."

Did you know that May is Healthy Vision Month? In the Canadian Ophthalmological Society post below, you can find out about each of the top five serious eye health concerns in Canada and explore their causes, risk factors, and how they’re diagnosed and treated. You can also check your ‘EyeQ’ by taking a quiz (https://www.seethepossibilities.ca/big-five-quiz/) to see how much you already know and watch videos to learn even more.

May is Healthy Vision Month—a time to pause and reflect on the well-being of our eyes. In the midst of our busy lives, it's easy to overlook the significance of eye care. But we want to change that narrative.

seethepossibilities.ca is a resource hub designed to empower and inform. Here, you'll find insights on common eye conditions and hear from experts in our Ask the Expert series on topics such as AMD, Children's Eye Health, Glaucoma and more.

Through patient stories, seethepossibilities.ca provides a glimpse into the real-life experiences of those living with eye conditions and their eye health experiences. Here, you can meet Erika, who wore glasses from 10 months old, had hyperopia, astigmatism and other eye conditions; read about her journey to healthy vision. And you can also listen to Robert share what it was like to lose his sight and get it back thanks to a corneal transplant.

Let's make a conscious effort this month to prioritize our vision. Take a moment to explore seethepossibilities.ca and encourage patients, colleagues, friends and family to have meaningful conversations about eye health.

Together, let's raise awareness and foster a community of support and understanding.
