Your metabolism didn't fail you. It changed. There's a difference.
Something shifts in your 40s that nobody adequately prepares you for.
You're eating the same way you always have. Maybe even less. You're moving your body. And the weight — particularly around your middle — is redistributing and settling in ways that feel completely out of your control.
Because it is.
Here's what's actually happening.
As you move through perimenopause — that transitional phase that can begin anywhere from your early 40s — estrogen and progesterone levels start to fluctuate and eventually decline. And those hormones don't just affect your cycle. They are deeply embedded in your metabolic function.
Estrogen influences where your body stores fat. When it's present in healthy amounts, fat tends to distribute peripherally — hips, thighs. As it declines, fat storage shifts centrally — the abdomen. This isn't cosmetic. Visceral abdominal fat is metabolically active in ways that drive inflammation, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular risk.
Progesterone decline contributes to poor sleep — and poor sleep directly impairs the hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. Specifically ghrelin, which tells you you're hungry, rises. Leptin, which tells you you're full, falls. You're not imagining the increased appetite. Your biology is driving it.
And then there's insulin sensitivity. Research published by Genazzani et al. in 2023 in the journal GREM documented the clear relationship between menopause, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome — highlighting how the hormonal shift of this life stage meaningfully disrupts glucose metabolism in ways that make weight management genuinely harder.
My personal experience with this was exactly what the research describes — stubborn central weight gain despite doing many of the right things.
Understanding the mechanism didn't make it easier, but it did make it make sense. And it changed how I approached the solution.
