Content Warning: This message discusses pregnancy and infant loss.

October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. We recognize that this time can be especially difficult for many, and our hearts go out to all those who have faced the heartbreak of pregnancy or infant loss. Midwives are here to support our clients and their families during these incredibly tough times.

There are various ways to support a someone who is grieving—whether it’s making yourself available for a call, lending a hand around the house, sharing memories of their child, or connecting them with helpful resources and community support. If you’re supporting someone navigating this difficult journey, please remember that everyone experiences grief differently, and there are many meaningful ways to show your compassion.

As James Baldwin wrote, “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.”

If you are unmoved watching Palestinian mothers carrying their children’s limp bodies across the rubble every day in Gaza, I don’t really want to hear about “how the love of women saved you.” Audre Lorde was for Palestinian resistance and liberation. We get free together.

It is an expensive trip and they brought many many donations. Their goal is to train and teach the local maternity care providers up to date skills and to bring them equipment and supplies. Please consider donating using the link provided in my stories.

What are the benefits and risks associated with doula support in labor? Save this post for later! ✅

In 2017, Bohren et al. published an updated Cochrane review on continuous support in childbirth. They combined the results of 26 trials with more than 15,000 people across 17 countries including North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, in both high-income and middle-income settings.

People in these studies were randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to either receive continuous, one-on-one support during labor or “usual care.”

Overall, participants who received continuous support were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or forceps-assisted births, and Cesareans. In addition, their labors were shorter by about 40 minutes on average, and their babies were less likely to have low Apgar scores at birth (an Apgar score is a measure of a baby’s immediate health at birth). There was some evidence that doula support in labor lowered rates of postpartum depression. There was no evidence that there are any negative effects of doula support.

The results of this study mean that continuous support, including support from a doula, is a safe and beneficial way to increase the chances of better health outcomes for your family.
