A recent study from Nihon University School of Dentistry, Japan, highlights a critical health concern for elderly denture wearers. The research reveals that wearing dentures while sleeping doubles the risk of pneumonia in seniors aged 85 and older. Poor oral health and hygiene have long been recognized as significant risk factors for pneumonia, and this study provides concrete evidence on the impact of overnight denture wearing.

• Seniors who wore dentures during sleep had a 2.3-fold higher risk of pneumonia.
