Fascia Research: Architecture of the Extracellular Matrix

“A research team in Virginia, USA has developed a revolutionary microscopic imaging technique that unveils the stunning architecture of the extracellular matrix of fascia like never before! 🔬👀

I can’t help but think that legendary matrix pioneers Alfred Pischinger and Hartmut Heine would have been just as thrilled as I am! 🤩 Can’t wait to see what groundbreaking insights this cutting-edge tool will reveal in the coming years—how the ECM adapts to mechanical forces, biochemical shifts, and other biological influences.”

Proprioception: Research has determined that fascia tissues have 6x to 8x more proprioceptive sensory nerve endings than red muscle

“This makes the fascia system arguably the body’s largest sensory organ.“

Fascia
I often get asked what fascia is, and I always struggle in the moment to explain to them what it is and where it is. So here is an explanation!
Fascia is a fibrous connective tissue that is almost web like. There are 3 types: the first is superficial fascia, which as the name suggests is found superficially under the skin; then there is the deep fascia which is surrounding the muscles; and then there is visceral fascia, which surrounds the organs of the body.
Fascia is comprised of primarily collagen, but also contains elastin (allows for stretch and recoil) and ground substance (gel like substance which fills in the spaces between the fibers, it provides lubricant and allows exchange of nutrients and removal of waste).
Fascia has a dense system of sensory nerves, which helps with pain reception.
A restriction in the fascia can cause pain and restriction in movement. Over time it can become hardened and will change a person's posture or ability to move.
One of the modalities I use is Myofascial remodeling. This is done by moving the muscles and fascia either into a stretch or into ease, as sometimes they don't want to release, so they are moved into the opposite, until they release!

Sciatica is definitely not fun. I have experienced it, so I totally understand what my clients are going through. Sciatica is characterized by an electric shock type of pain that starts at the buttock and runs down the back of the leg to the foot. The first few steps when getting up is the worst. Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve is compressed. This can be due to a herniated disc or a bone spur, that creates the compression.
Through using ice, stretching and Myofascial treatment sciatica can be treated. The ice helps to take any swelling down, and the stretching helps to relieve the tension in the muscles, so that the compression is decreased. Myofascial helps to also relieve the tension in the lower back and leg, which can also help to adjust and realign, so that the compression is relieved even more.
So if you are suffering from Sciatica, contact me!
