Comfortable marine specimens and a satisfied client

This project was part of a facility renovation; our mandate was to replace an existing installation of marine holding trays; the old system though functional was showing its age and required a replacement and modernization.

We worked with the facility personnel to design and fit this system within its specified location; it consists of two parts; the habitat structure and tanks are located within the zoology lab with the filtration and life support equipment within an adjacent prep room. Spatial constrains, through the wall plumbing and availability of required services had to be coordinated between both parties as the installation was done by the facility personnel. Proper planning, coordination and communication made it all work and allowed us to bring this to completion to the clients’ full satisfaction as the following testimonial demonstrates.

The Cap Dauphin fishermen’s Coop has been successfully operating Aquabiotech Eco-Lobster Condo systems for some 15 years now. Originally these were added as a retrofit project to expand the carrying capacity of their existing pounds, improve lobster health and counter high summertime water temperatures that are more and more frequent with the changing climate.

As our technology has been proven to be functional, reliable, and cost effective in solving their storage and temperature control needs they have over the years expanded to maximize their holding capacity within the existing facility. Limited by the existing space and with fishermen looking to join the fishermen’s coop they decided to go ahead with a major expansion; always with Aquabiotech as their technology partner. A new purpose-built building was constructed to house our industrial scale Eco-Lobster Condo systems, ultimately the expansion added 600 000 lbs. of holding capacity, nearly doubling the cooperatives lobster holding capacity to 1,200,000 lbs. The Co-op is now among, if not the largest lobster holding facilities in eastern North America and likely the world.

We at Aquabiotech are proud of the relationship that has evolved between the fisherman’s Co-op and our company. The road traveled from the original lobster pounds to the present-day facility has been a long one that has been accomplished over many phases, the partnership continues to this day with other projects in the works.

Aquabiotech Biofilter Inoculation Station and new lobster holding system at the Métro distribution centre.

We recently finished the installation of the new lobster containment system in the brand-new state of the art distribution centre of the Métro Grocery chain in Terrebonne, Qc. This system can house 2200lbs of lobster for short term holding. This facility is not ocean side, seawater is made on site using an Aquabiotech designed saltwater mixing system.

The holding system is currently being prepared to receive it is first tenants. To inoculate the biofilter an Aquabiotech Biofilter Inoculation Station “BIS” has been deployed to the clients’ location. This automated system fully inoculates the biofilter media over the course of several weeks; ammonia, nitrate and nitrite measurements, data logging, chemical mixing and dosing are fully automatic. Saving the operator many work hours over the course of the process.

The Biolfilter Inoculation Station is only available from Aquabiotech; if you have an application requiring safe pre inoculated biofilter media, contact us for more information. Aquabiotech Quarantine Holding Tank for the Montreal Biodome

We recently built and delivered a quarantine holding tank for the Biodome of Montreal, part of the Space for life network of museums that include Biodôme, Biosphère, Jardin botanique, Insectarium and Planétarium.
This is a stand-alone Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) with complete water recycling, this unit will be useful to hold new arrivals destined to the aquatic habitats through their quarantine period, will allow the segregation of fish and aquatic animals that require particular care and will also serve for the temporary holding of specimens.

Lobster chilling in the Sonora
This spring we had the pleasure of collaborating with the folks at the Phoenix, AZ location of the Pier 22 Seafood Co., a division of Shamrock Foods, on the installation of a new, closed containment lobster holding system. The system is designed to be compact with a reduced footprint; it can hold up to 1000 lbs. of lobster in a cabinet with trays at a low temperature and allows for both short- and long-term storage. The installation includes all the equipment required to manufacture seawater on site.
With the right system and Aquabiotech as a partner, live lobster can be housed anywhere. If you have a lobster holding project, contact us, we have solutions. It is with deepest regrets and great sadness that we must announce the recent passing of Hélène Drouin, founding partner & president of Aquabiotech Inc. Following a long, valiant fight with cancer Hélène passed from this plane of existence on to the next on May 30th, 2022, she was 68 years old. Her incredible courage, determination and strength of character allowed her to face the challenges that three and a half years of disease imposed on her head on; to ultimately flout the original prognosis that gave her only months to live.

A celebration of her life was held on June 12th; family, friends, colleagues and many others upon whom she had a positive influence were present to commemorate her life and offer their support to the family in this difficult time.

For many clients and partners Hélène was likely the face and voice of Aquabiotech; & of course her passing will force some changes upon our business, our structure and our personnel’s responsibilities. However, please know; we remain committed to our clients, their projects and needs. We intend and are determined to honor Hélène by continuing and advancing her life’s work, our company Aquabiotech Inc.

Cap Dauphin Fishermen's coop on the Magdelen Islands in Quebec has partnered yet again with Aquabiotech to expand their lobster holding capacity. Our companies have been working together since 2011, over this period the coop's holding capabilities have gone from 200K lbs to approximately 600k lbs with the help of Aquabiotech's expertise. With this new expansion the Cap Dauphin fishermen will be able to lodge in excess of 1 million lbs of live lobster at any given time.
