March 18, 2026, is National Dietitians Day! This special day is celebrated annually during Nutrition Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of nutrition and the critical work of Registered Dietitians.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are regulated health care professionals who bring specialized skills and knowledge to support the nutritional needs of patients at risk due to medical conditions, illnesses, or injuries.

At NHH, our Registered Dietitians are also Certified Diabetes Educators. Working closely with care teams, our dietitians play a crucial role in managing diabetes, providing invaluable educational resources to patients and their caregivers.

Please join us in celebrating this incredible team for their contribution to NHH and their unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional patient care!

Thank you to all those who joined us for the NHH Virtual Board Open House! If you missed our virtual event but still want to know more about volunteering as a Community Member, please visit the nhh.ca website using the link below.

Meet NHH Board Director, Carol Anne Bell-Smith as part of our continuing series highlighting our Board Volunteers.

Carol Anne joined the Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Board of Directors as a Community Member, and in 2024 became a Board Director serving on the Quality and Safety and Finance and Audit Committees.

As a former Director of Education and Critical Care Registered Nurse, Carol Anne first decided to volunteer as a Community Member to continue supporting the local healthcare professional community. She soon realized that her lived experience also brought an important perspective to the Board.

“I was a registered nurse for more than forty years, so I have first-hand experience with some of the issues and challenges that healthcare professionals face, so I thought those skills would be a natural fit with the Board. As a person living with a disability, I have also been able to offer my experiences accessing healthcare to better inform the decision-making process,” she says.

As one of the working group members for the ‘Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Legislative Committee’, and Chair of the ‘Accessibility Advisory Committee’ for the Town of Cobourg, Carol Anne is uniquely positioned to discuss some of the barriers to accessing care in our community.

“When we are creating new programs or updating facilities or equipment, I’m assessing whether persons with both visible and non-visible disabilities can access information, are supported by enhanced technology, and that we have facilities that are accessible. Sometimes overcoming barriers requires co-ordination with outside partners. You may have the right programs in place, but if patients are experiencing transportation barriers, we need to work with community partners to make sure that people can even get to our doors,” she explains.

To those who are thinking about joining the Board, but don’t think they have the experience she says: “Everyone has a place at this table and the skills you bring could positively impact health care for members in our community. I can’t think of a better volunteer experience.”

Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) and the NHH Foundation are pleased to announce that the installation of the new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine and supporting equipment is complete. The MRI is now fully operational and patients are being accepted.

Renovation of NHH’s MRI suite began on August 6, 2025, with the installation of a temporary MRI trailer, and the decommissioning of the hospital’s original MRI machine, which was installed in 2007. A key component of the hospital’s long-term capital equipment strategy, and the NHH Foundation’s Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign, the much-anticipated new MRI machine arrived at NHH on December 6, 2025, and work began immediately to install and test the new equipment.

“The new MRI represents a transformative advancement of our Diagnostic Imaging services. It is a beautiful example of this team’s commitment to growth and continuous investment in new technology. I would like to thank NHH’s Diagnostic Imaging team for their work in minimizing the disruption to patient care during the renovation work. I also want to thank our community, whose generosity and enthusiasm—inspired by our outstanding NHH Foundation—supported this capital renewal project and ensured that NHH continues to be well-positioned to deliver exceptional care to our patients well into the future. Finally, I want to recognize our Procurement, Project Management, IT, Infection Prevention and Control, Facilities and Environmental Services teams, whose coordination and expertise ensured the successful and timely completion of this project,” says NHH President and CEO, Susan Walsh.

“To see the MRI now in service is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together,” said Rhonda Cunningham, NHH Foundation CEO. “An early lead gift from Don and Jane Hunter helped us tremendously to bring what was once a vision to this new reality. Thank you to the Hunters and to all those who joined in the effort to bring this advanced technology to our community.”

Meet Board Director, Mike Cassaday
NHH Board of Directors

In the latest in our series highlighting our Board Volunteers, meet NHH Board Director, Mike Cassaday.

Mike joined the Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Board of Directors as a Community Member, and in 2024 became a Board Director serving on the Finance and Audit Committee.
He first decided to volunteer as a Community Member to learn about, and contribute, to his new community.

“My wife grew up in Brighton, so when I retired, we decided to move back to the area where she grew up. As I grew to know the area better, I was surprised at the amount of community involvement that the hospital welcomes, and the many volunteer opportunities that help to sustain its many programs. As we collectively emerged from COVID, I wanted to support those volunteer opportunities and the organization that gave us so much during those difficult days,” he says.

Having held numerous positions in corporate governance, Mike welcomed the role of Community Member as a first step towards becoming a Director on the Board.

As a Community Member of the Board, I had an opportunity to understand how hospital budgets are created and saw first-hand the level of collaboration, community consultation and corporate governance that goes into every decision about the delivery of healthcare at the hospital. I was given the opportunity to familiarize myself with the hospital processes, while still being an active participant at the meetings,” he explains.

To those who are worried about the time commitment that volunteering may require, he answers: “It’s not onerous! Give what you can, when you can. I truly enjoy my time with my colleagues and it’s a great way to give back.”

Meet Mike at the NHH Virtual Board Open House, on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 PM. NHH announces installation of SPECT-CT, newest diagnostic imaging equipment enabled by local donor support!

Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH), together with our partners in the NHH Foundation, are pleased to announce the completion of renovations to the Nuclear Imaging area of the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) department and the successful introduction of new SPECT-CT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) equipment. SPECT-CT is a non-invasive hybrid technology which combines the anatomical information of Computed Tomography (CT) with the functional information of Nuclear Medicine. The result is a more comprehensive image, improving diagnostic accuracy and localization of abnormalities and enhancing the quality of clinical reporting to support patient care.

The introduction of the SPECT-CT to NHH’s Diagnostic Imaging department will complement the existing services already provided at NHH and enhance access to advanced diagnostic procedures for local providers and patients close to home. A key component of the hospital’s long-term capital equipment strategy, and the NHH Foundation’s Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign.

“Growth and continuous enhancement of NHH services would not be possible without it. The SPECT-CT is one of many growth projects undertaken at NHH in the past year, and I congratulate the team on completing this project on time and on budget while also juggling many other competing priorities. A very special thank you to the many donors who answered the call for support. Many members of this community will benefit from their generosity," says Susan Walsh, NHH President and CEO.

“I am excited about the improvements ahead and the positive impact this renovation and expanded testing capacity will have in supporting the continued growth of Diagnostic Imaging at NHH. Together these efforts will ensure that NHH remains well-positioned to continue to deliver high-quality care to our patients well into the future,” says Dr. Ketov, NHH Chief of Staff.

March 2-8 is Social Work Week in Ontario. Social workers are a vital part of the health and social care system. Here at NHH, social workers provide integral support to multiple departments and services across NHH, like Medical/Surgical Care, Post Acute Specialty Services, Community Mental Health Services, Cancer and Supportive Care, the Emergency Department, and our Geriatric Activation Team.

The 2026 theme is "Care. Insight. Together." It sums up the many roles they perform very well. We’re grateful to social workers throughout NHH for the important work they do helping patients and families understand and process life-changing diagnoses, navigate through difficult decisions, connect with community supports and communicate with care teams.

Join us in thanking the social workers on the NHH team and throughout our health and social care system for their hard work, dedication, resilience and compassion.

In the latest in our series highlighting our Board volunteers, meet NHH Board Director, Laina Andrews!

Laina Andrews first joined the Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) Board of Directors as a Community Member in 2025 and is now a Board Director serving on the Quality and Safety and Facilities and Campus Development Committees.

She decided to volunteer as a Community Member of the Board after many interactions with the hospital in her role as a parent to two active children, as a daughter of aging parents, and as Principal of Cobourg D.C.I. West and then Cobourg Collegiate Institute.

“As both a mother, and in my role as a principal, I had several occasions to interact with the hospital, and in every instance the quality of care we received was exceptional. When I was looking for a volunteer opportunity, I immediately thought of NHH,” she explains.

Laina’s work in public education (Superintendent of Education in Human Resources and Secondary Programming, in addition to her many years as a secondary school principal), brings a unique perspective to the Board.

“The education and health care sectors share many common values. One of those values is a shared commitment to putting ‘People First.’ Hospital leadership, support staff, physicians and frontline healthcare providers all need to make sure that the decisions and practices we undertake support those values,” she explains. “Volunteers play a critical part of living and supporting those values too.”

To those who may be concerned about the time commitment that volunteering on a Board may require, she offers this advice: “You don’t have to be retired to join the Board. Joining as a Community Member is a good ‘toe dip’, and a wonderful opportunity to see what it’s all about. If it works for you, then it’s the right time to join.”

Join Laina at the NHH Board’s Virtual Open House on Monday, March 10 at 7 PM. Register and learn more about the NHH Board (including answers to frequently asked questions and a Board Expression of Interest form) at nhh.ca under the About NHH tab.
