What a great resource!

Caregivers, when you’re focused on caring for someone else, it can be hard to find time for your own mental health. Between appointments, medication pickups, and daily care tasks, feelings of burnout, grief, and guilt can quickly build up.

This winter, the Ontario Health Team of Northumberland has partnered with the Northumberland Family Health Team and the Ontario Caregiver Organization to bring their Supporting Caregiver Awareness, Learning and Empowerment (SCALE) Together program to caregivers in person at Ed’s House. We’re happy to provide the space for this important program in our Education Room.

Join NHH on Wednesday, January 28 at 5:30 for the third in our Growing Care for the Future virtual forums to gather community input for NHH’s next master plan.

Building on our first and second forums (find highlights from these conversations on the Master Planning section of our website at nhh.ca this third forum (hosted on Zoom) will take a deeper look at a key area of growth for NHH: outpatient services, including, emergency services, ambulatory clinics, cancer care, dialysis, and community mental health and addiction services.

“In the past two public forums we discussed current NHH services and projects that are underway like the installation of a new MRI, and the addition of a fourth operating room and our inpatient care services. We received valuable feedback that will help us plan for the future of the hospital in those areas,” says Susan Walsh, President and CEO. “In this third forum, we are asking area residents for input regarding NHH’s outpatient services. We hope that you will join us for another fulsome discussion where we will share information and gather your feedback on the future needs for these services.”

Northumberland Hills Hospital welcomes medical students for Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) Week 2026

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY/ Thursday, January 15, 2026 — Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) is pleased to collaborate with the Rural Ontario Medical Program (ROMP) for their January 2026 ROMP Week!

The ROMP Week program is an elective opportunity that gives first-year medical students a chance to meet and shadow local family physicians, while spending time working in multiple hospital departments over the course of one week. This valuable hands-on clinical experience is also meant to highlight the medical and geographical benefits of practicing medicine in rural communities.

For ROMP’s January 2026 event, NHH was very pleased to welcome four first-year medical students—Ravni Bomra, Morgan McKeown, Sierra Stokes-Heck and Karina Wilk—who are all currently enrolled in the Queen’s-Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program.

The students began their ROMP Week experience on January 12 at Northumberland Hills Hospital with a welcome reception organized by Dr. Fraser Cameron, local family physician and the Ontario Health Team of Northumberland’s Primary Care Network Physician Lead. In addition to support from NHH staff and Dr. Cameron, as their ROMP Medical Education Lead, the students have also been paired with local family physicians--Dr. Kathy Barnard-Thompson, Dr. Marcus Cunningham, Dr. Mohamed Lebbe and Dr. Michelle Long—who are acting as the students’ preceptors for the week.

“I want to thank my colleagues who have generously given of their time to create a very fulsome experience for these students and helping us to showcase our Northumberland hospitality,” says Dr. Fraser Cameron.

“I want to recognize Dr. Cameron, NHH medical and administrative staff and our 2026 preceptors, for taking time from their own busy work weeks to educate and inspire the next generation of family physicians,” says Dr. Pavel (Paul) Ketov, NHH Chief of Staff.

“NHH has been a longtime participant in the ROMP program, and we recognize its positive impact on physician recruitment in rural communities. ROMP not only provides a unique opportunity for medical students to gain hands-on clinical experience very early on in their programs, but it can also foster what may well be lasting connections to our community and the physicians who work here today. Past ROMP Week students have returned to Northumberland and NHH later in their training or professional careers, demonstrating the benefit of ROMP for the students, the hospital and the community at large,” says Susan Walsh, NHH President and CEO.

In addition to their clinical activities, the visiting students have also taken part in several social events during the week-long program, further helping to build their networks and connections to the region.

COVID-19 outbreak on NHH’s 1B (Restorative Care and Palliative Care) units declared over

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY/Tuesday, January 6, 2026 — Northumberland
Hills Hospital (NHH) announced today the conclusion of a COVID-19 outbreak that had impacted the hospital’s first floor 1B (Restorative Care and Palliative Care) units.

The COVID-19 outbreak was first confirmed by Lakelands Public Health on December 17, 2025.

While the COVID-19 outbreak has been resolved, the hospital is remaining cautious due to concerns regarding isolated instances of Influenza A among patients on 1A. Out of an abundance of caution, NHH’s Infection Prevention and Control team has recommended the temporary continuation of in-room dining services on the first floor, and has extended the pause for group activities on both 1A and 1B.

The following is a summary of the infection prevention and control measures that remain in place at NHH:

Enhanced environmental cleaning – Enhanced cleaning, with a focus on high touch surfaces and common spaces has been implemented by the NHH Environmental Services team.
Update to dining room service – dining room service will continue to be replaced with in-room service on both 1B (Restorative Care) and 1A (Inpatient Rehabilitation) as a precaution.
Group activities for patients will remain suspended – As a precaution and to support social distancing, group activities will be paused on both 1B and 1A.
Daily self-screening by all workers for symptoms of respiratory infection – All individuals entering the hospital for work must pre-screen for symptoms and refrain from entering the building or Community Mental Health offices in the event symptoms develop, pending discussion with NHH Occupational Health.
Monitoring of patients and staff considered “high risk contacts” – Any patients who have been identified as having a high risk of exposure have been tested, relocated, and are being cared for with appropriate precautions; similarly, staff at risk of an exposure will also be asked to monitor and report development of any symptoms.
Staff vaccinations - All NHH staff, physicians, midwives and volunteers, are required to be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Occupational Health continues to offer annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines to further reduce the risk of infection and spread.
Thorough and frequent hand hygiene practices – Hand hygiene continues to be a vital method of reducing the risk of infection transmission; strict adherence to thorough and frequent hand hygiene will continue to be reinforced hospital wide.
Proactive communication – Updates will be shared as required through the hospital’s website and related social media channels.

Masking remains a shared responsibility to mitigate spread
While masking remains optional in the hospital and Community Mental Health
offices, visitors are reminded to monitor for any symptoms of communicable illness,
including COVID-19, prior to visiting, and refrain from visiting when symptoms are
present. Masks continue to be readily available at all hospital entrances and at the
Community Mental Health offices.

Visiting reminders
Regular visiting will continue. New admissions to 1B (Restorative Care and Palliative Care) units will be assessed on a patient-by-patient basis.

It’s a girl! First baby of the new year born at Northumberland Hills was welcomed on January 1, 2026!

Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) has welcomed its first baby of the new year! Born to Hayley Boivin and Nate Hladysh of Port Hope, Ontario, the baby girl—named Emma —and was born at 12:02 a.m., weighing 6 pounds 7 ounces (2920 grams), and 19 inches (49 cm) long. She is the first child for Hayley and Nate.

“We thought she would be born earlier, but as the day went on, we thought maybe she will be a New Year baby. She just made it into the new year! We are excited, happy, and a bit overwhelmed,” said Hayley. “We want to thank Dr. Awad and Dr. Smith, the aestheticist Dr. Radonich, and the nurses, Alyssa, Tori and Kristen for all of their care and attentiveness.”

As per hospital tradition, baby Emma will go home from NHH with a gift basket prepared and donated by the staff and volunteers of the hospital. Members of the Maternal/Child Care team took the initiative to hand-pick items they felt new parents would appreciate and enjoy. With support from NHH, the NHH Foundation, and the NHH Auxiliary, a personalized gift basket was presented to Hayley and Nate.

“Thank you to everyone at NHH for the wonderful gift basket. What a lovely surprise. We are overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness,” said Hayley.

The Maternal/Child Care team at NHH supported more than 500 births at the hospital in the last fiscal year, thanks to a strong partnership with local obstetrician-gynecologists, family physicians, anesthesiologists, and area midwives.

Designed with the unique needs of newborns, their mothers and family members in mind, NHH's Maternal/Child Care unit is equipped with six labour and delivery beds, each in their own private suite, a Caesarean-section operating room, and advanced fetal and patient monitoring. New in January 2026, is a Newborn, Perinatal and Reproductive Care Clinic (NPR) that will provide in-hospital, non-urgent ambulatory services to support women’s wellness and newborn health in the antenatal and postpartum phases of care for patients across Northumberland County. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks on our website.
