Did you know that chiropodists are required to complete numerous hours of continuing education each year to maintain their license?

It’s something we genuinely value at The Foot Health Centre. We love continued learning, even reviewing familiar conditions with fresh eyes helps us provide more thoughtful, precise care.

Today we are participating in additional training in podiatric dermatology, and we’re excited to be putting a new clinical tool to use in the process: a dermatoscope.

A dermatoscope allows us to see structures beneath the surface of the skin and nail that aren’t visible to the naked eye, helping us assess things like persistent lesions, plantar warts, pigmented areas, and other skin and nail changes affecting the feet with greater clarity.

It’s one more way we continue investing in knowledge, skill, and the quality of care we provide every day. 🦶🔍

At first glance, it might look like a simple piece of plastic with an arch.

But custom orthotics are so much more than that.

They’re built on science and biomechanics, shaped by physics, and designed to influence how your entire body moves—from the ground up. Every curve, contour, and adjustment is intentional, working to support alignment, reduce strain, and help your body move more efficiently.

They may be small.

But the precision behind them—and the impact they can have—is anything but. 👣

This may look like a quiet moment.
But there’s a lot going on here.
Questions being asked.
Details being noted.
Decisions being shaped—carefully.

Also: yes, someone is staring intently at your foot.
That’s how you know you’re in the right place.

This screen is showing a non-weight-bearing digital foot scan—the starting point for custom orthotics.

It may look simple, but this scan captures precise foot shape and structure while your foot is off-loaded, allowing us to build orthotics from an accurate neutral position. That matters, because orthotics aren’t just arch supports—they’re about physics, alignment, and how forces move through your body.

This is why seeing a chiropodist matters. As the foot and orthotic specialists, chiropodists know how to position the foot correctly during scanning, how to interpret what we see, and how to translate that data into an orthotic that actually does its job.

The scan is just the tool.
The expertise behind it is what makes it work. 👣

This is the moment we politely remind your big toe who’s in charge. 😄

The big toe joint is where every step finishes. If it can’t bend and do its job properly, your foot starts borrowing movement from everywhere else—and that’s when things get cranky.

So yes, we poke it.
We move it.

We see how it behaves under real hands, not just on paper.

Because custom orthotics aren’t about slapping support under your foot—they’re about helping your foot move better, from heel strike to toe-off.

Your big toe may be small…
but it has main character energy. 👣

Every step has a story.
Some are built on strong foundations.
Others are shaped by wear, time, and repetition.

The foot is both a foundation and a finely tuned system—made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, more than 30 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons, layered fascia, nerves, and a complex vascular network. Each structure plays a role in how we move, adapt, and absorb force with every step.

When the system works in harmony, movement feels effortless. When one part is under strain, the entire structure compensates.

Our role is to understand how that story is unfolding—carefully assessing structure, alignment, and function—so care is guided by how your feet truly work, not just how they feel.

Why we scan feet without standing on them

It may feel a little strange, but there’s a good reason we ask you not to stand when we’re capturing your foot for custom orthotics.

When you’re standing, your foot spreads, flattens, and changes shape. By scanning your foot in a non-weight-bearing position, we capture its true shape—before gravity gets involved. That exact 3D model is what your orthotics are built from.

Non-weight-bearing has long been the gold standard for orthotic fabrication, whether done with digital scanning or the old plaster-of-Paris method (which, yes, was messy).

Digital scanning is our go-to now, but traditional casting still has its place and gets used when it’s the better option.

Less mess. More precision. Better outcomes.

And nearly 30 years of our experience behind it. 👣

A change we’re still proud of.

Nearly a year and a half ago, we made the decision to create a space of our own—one that truly reflects how we care: thoughtful, professional, and built to support both our team and our patients.

This reception wall has seen the early days, the busy days, meaningful conversations, growth, and a lot of good care in motion. It’s witnessed the moments that remind us why we made the change. It was a healthy decision—one that continues to support the work we do every day.

We’re proud of what we’ve built, and grateful for everyone who’s been part of the journey. 👣

One of the most common questions we hear is, “Will it hurt?”
And the honest answer is: most of the time, no.

Many foot conditions can be treated comfortably without anaesthetic at all. We always start gently and talk you through what to expect. If something does feel uncomfortable, we slow down, adjust, and check in with you.

And if a procedure is likely to be painful, or if you’re anxious, we do have the option to use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.

Your comfort matters. Being kind, patient, and listening comes first—every time.
