☀️Out of Office ☀️

I’ll be taking some time to rest and recharge from March 13–20.

As always, caring for ourselves is part of the work we do, and I’ll be back refreshed and ready to support you.

🌿Starting high school comes with big changes, and often, big emotions. From excitement and hope to worry, fear, and overwhelm, all of it is normal.

Teens don’t need to have it all figured out. They need safe spaces, understanding adults, and tools to help them make sense of what they’re feeling.

This transition can be tough, but no one has to navigate it alone. 💛

Hey ! I’m Kody, a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist.

We often see a child’s struggle before we understand it. Whether it’s the restless energy of ADHD, the quiet withdrawal of anxiety, or the complex ‘acting out’ that follows trauma and adversity, these behaviors are usually a search for safety. It is incredibly difficult to watch your child hurt and feel like you’ve run out of tools to help them.

I provide a relational, supportive space for children, teens, and families, as well as individual adults. My work is focused on building safety through connection. I provide a safe space to explore how our brains and bodies react to stress and big emotions. Together, we’ll look at the ‘why’ behind these reactions, helping you move from a place of frustration to one of understanding and regulation.

By drawing on a variety of therapeutic approaches tailored to your unique needs, I help youth and caregivers move beyond just ‘managing symptoms.’ We work together to build practical tools and strengthen the underlying bond, creating a grounded environment where you can process past hurts and move toward a more connected, resilient future.

Therapy is a significant step, but I believe the process should feel approachable, supportive, and at times even lighthearted 💚

💙So grateful for our incredible community 💙

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate one year in business. What an unforgettable day! Together, we broke the record for the most skaters at a public skate in Port Hope with 200+ skaters !⛸️🎉

Seeing our community come together in a shared, joyful activity was truly something special. This is exactly what I hoped for, and can’t thank each and every one of you for coming.

Here’s to connection, community, and momentum. Stay tuned , there will be more connection building events to come with Kody Kearns Counselling ✨

✨ One Year of Kody Kearns Counselling ✨

January marks one year in business, and I wanted to celebrate in a way that feels most aligned with my heart and my work.

I’m hosting a free public skate as a small way of giving back to the community that has trusted, supported, and grown alongside this practice. Movement, laughter, and shared experiences create powerful moments of connection and regulation, especially for families.

My hope is that this skate creates a few magical moments:
❄️ time together
❄️ ease in our bodies
❄️ memories that linger

Thank you for being part of this journey. I can’t wait to celebrate with you on the ice. 🤍⛸️

This is a tough area of learning for many kids, especially children who have any history of adversity or anxiety.

As caring adults, it’s our job to teach and learn alongside our littles. Please always share information based on your child’s capacity to cope with information. If the important themes of fear, loss, separation and hurt are too much for your child… focus on the resiliency and strength of indigenous voices and values 🧡

💙 Hey Dads, let’s be real 💙

Some days you crush it.
Other days you wonder if you’re doing any of this right.

The late nights, the “Dad, can you…?”, the pressure to provide, protect, and keep it all together, it’s a lot.

Here’s the thing 👇
✅ Your kids don’t need you to be perfect.
✅ They just need you to show up.
✅ Even when you’re tired, unsure, or learning as you go.

Being a dad isn’t about knowing all the answers. It’s about being there, loving hard, and trying again tomorrow.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or carrying it all on your own just know: you’re not alone. Support is out there for you, too.

✨ School Readiness: Excitement + Nerves are Both Okay! ✨

Starting school or going back to school is a big transition for kids—and for parents too! 💛

It’s normal for children to feel excited about making friends, playing, and learning new things, while also feeling nervous about change, routines, and the unknown.

🌱 To support your child through this transition:
✅ Visit the school playground together—let them get familiar with the space.
✅ Plan a picnic in the park and practice “school-like” routines such as sitting together for lunch. You can even practice opening up their backpacks and lunch containers together.
✅ Open up dialogue: Ask questions like “What are you most curious about?” or “What might feel a little tricky?” to help them put feelings into words.

💬 Talking about both the fun and the worries helps kids build confidence, feel understood, and know that it’s okay to have mixed emotions.

You’ve got this—and so do they! 🌟

🌱 📗Learning through story telling📗🌱

Ever tried asking a child “How are you feeling?” and got a shrug or “I don’t know…”? That’s because naming and talking about emotions can be really hard — especially when the topic feels big or overwhelming.

That’s where books come in.

✨ Stories create a safe distance for kids and teens to explore tough topics.
Instead of saying, “Let’s talk about your anxiety,” we can say,
“Let’s read about a character who feels nervous sometimes.”

Through stories, children:
📖 See themselves in characters
📖 Learn that others feel the same way
📖 Get language to describe their emotions
📖 Discover healthy ways to cope — all without the pressure of being “on the spot”

💬 It’s so much easier for kids to understand their own mental health when it’s told through someone else’s story first. That “aha!” moment? It happens when they realize, “That’s how I feel too!”

🌈 Let’s keep giving kids tools to understand themselves — one story at a time.

Thank you to for the book recommendations for our learning library!
