This is a tough area of learning for many kids, especially children who have any history of adversity or anxiety.

As caring adults, it’s our job to teach and learn alongside our littles. Please always share information based on your child’s capacity to cope with information. If the important themes of fear, loss, separation and hurt are too much for your child… focus on the resiliency and strength of indigenous voices and values 🧡

💙 Hey Dads, let’s be real 💙

Some days you crush it.
Other days you wonder if you’re doing any of this right.

The late nights, the “Dad, can you…?”, the pressure to provide, protect, and keep it all together, it’s a lot.

Here’s the thing 👇
✅ Your kids don’t need you to be perfect.
✅ They just need you to show up.
✅ Even when you’re tired, unsure, or learning as you go.

Being a dad isn’t about knowing all the answers. It’s about being there, loving hard, and trying again tomorrow.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin or carrying it all on your own just know: you’re not alone. Support is out there for you, too.

✨ School Readiness: Excitement + Nerves are Both Okay! ✨

Starting school or going back to school is a big transition for kids—and for parents too! 💛

It’s normal for children to feel excited about making friends, playing, and learning new things, while also feeling nervous about change, routines, and the unknown.

🌱 To support your child through this transition:
✅ Visit the school playground together—let them get familiar with the space.
✅ Plan a picnic in the park and practice “school-like” routines such as sitting together for lunch. You can even practice opening up their backpacks and lunch containers together.
✅ Open up dialogue: Ask questions like “What are you most curious about?” or “What might feel a little tricky?” to help them put feelings into words.

💬 Talking about both the fun and the worries helps kids build confidence, feel understood, and know that it’s okay to have mixed emotions.

You’ve got this—and so do they! 🌟

🌱 📗Learning through story telling📗🌱

Ever tried asking a child “How are you feeling?” and got a shrug or “I don’t know…”? That’s because naming and talking about emotions can be really hard — especially when the topic feels big or overwhelming.

That’s where books come in.

✨ Stories create a safe distance for kids and teens to explore tough topics.
Instead of saying, “Let’s talk about your anxiety,” we can say,
“Let’s read about a character who feels nervous sometimes.”

Through stories, children:
📖 See themselves in characters
📖 Learn that others feel the same way
📖 Get language to describe their emotions
📖 Discover healthy ways to cope — all without the pressure of being “on the spot”

💬 It’s so much easier for kids to understand their own mental health when it’s told through someone else’s story first. That “aha!” moment? It happens when they realize, “That’s how I feel too!”

🌈 Let’s keep giving kids tools to understand themselves — one story at a time.

Thank you to for the book recommendations for our learning library!

Creating Feeling Monsters 🫟🖌️🌱

🌿Why It Works:
🔘Movement and color choice allow for sensory regulation.
🔘Imaginative play taps into natural creativity.
🔘Externalizing emotions makes them easier to talk about ! It’s a lot less stressful to talk about a character than yourself, often removing the shame behind the behaviour.

Walk + Talk Therapy 🚶🎙️🌱

Sometimes it’s easier to open up when we’re not sitting face-to-face. That’s where Walk and Talk Therapy comes in.

For kids and teens, movement can make conversations feel more natural and less intimidating. It helps reduce anxiety, supports emotional regulation, and makes space for expression—without the pressure of “just talking.”

Whether we’re walking through a quiet trail or around the neighborhood, these sessions support mental health while engaging both body and mind.

Nature meets nurture. Healing doesn’t have to happen inside four walls.

Now offering Walk + Talk sessions for youth and teens!

Such a great group starting up. Erin is amazing !

A new community support group for "stressed" moms is being held at the Mill Resteraunt in Cobourg starting April 30th!
The focus of this group is on managing transitions, adapting to new situations, practicing self-care, and providing a safe space to share anxieties, challenges, and the less enjoyable aspects of motherhood.
Hosted by myself and Deanna Kennedy (Mama Coach), we will address topics relevant to mothers with infants 0-6 months, offering guidance, advice, and support.
Registration is recommended; please email me at edonnelly.rsw@gmail.com to register or inquire about the group. Motherhood can be challenging at times, but you don't have to face these challenges alone. 💗

✨ Supporting Children and Teens through grief and loss✨

Grief is hard for everyone, but for kids, it can be especially confusing. They may not have the words to express their feelings or fully understand what loss means. Often, people see grief and loss only relating to death, but for kids (and adults) grief and loss can come in many forms: losing a friendship, divorce, moving, loss of self, medical diagnosis/injury.

Here are a few ways I support kids in teens with loss.

💛 Validate Feelings – Let them know it’s okay to feel sad, angry, or even confused. Every emotion is valid.

🎨 Encourage Expression – Some kids talk, others draw, play, or act out their feelings. My space gives kids the freedom to express themselves in different ways.

💚Grief is a journey, and kids need love, patience, and support as they process their loss. 💙

Therapy can be fun ! 🧠💡😁

I use a playful approach when working with kids and teens ! Why ?

⚪️ Being playful lessens the threat response in the brain and builds safety.

⚪️Play can lead to increased connection and creativity, and helps the lower and upper parts of our brain to talk to one another - developing neuropathways.

⚪️Play allows kids to create psychological distance to be better able to talk about the tough stuff. It may be easier to talk through puppets, action figures, or sand ! 🐱🎭🏖️
