Osteopathy is a form of holistic manual therapy that searches for the root cause of a problem, I look at your body as a whole searching for asymmetries that allow me to better comprehend the current functionality of your anatomy. Through an Osteopathic lens, this allows me to consider everything fro...

Sage Sayings: “I have used all kinds of belts, swings, and other devices, hoping that they might be of some assistance to me. Being an educated mechanic myself, I have made many devices, but at the end of all efforts, I have found nothing to the well-trained human hand to do the work.” Andrew Taylor Still, Journal of Osteopathy, December, 1909.

Maybe it's a bride standing in a hot chapel, or an exhausted runner after a race. It could be someone watching a medical procedure on television or a donor at a blood drive.

💥Imaging and Treatment💥
-
💥 If you haven't heard, imaging results (Xrays, MRIs, etc) have a very poor correlation with pain and function in many cases, especially in the spine
-
🚨 So even if your Xray shows "degeneration" in your lumbar spine, you may still have great range of motion and no pain 😎
-
🚨 Or you may have a lot of pain and poor range of motion 😥
-
🚨 Yet either of these scenarios could also happen if your spine DOES NOT have any evidence of "degeneration" on the Xray 🤔
-
⁉️ Why? Because:
-
(1) Movement and function is DYNAMIC (not one position), and most imaging is STATIC, therefore you can't make a dynamic conclusion about function off of a static image
-
(2) We now know that ALL PAIN is an OUTPUT from the BRAIN (nervous system) in response to the CUMULATIVE effect of ALL the perceived THREATS in our lives (which may include local tissue sensitivity or injury, poor immune function, feelings of sadness, depression, stress, negative beliefs or fears, being around people/places we don't like, etc). So evidence of "tissue damage" on imaging is not sufficient for us to have pain, although it MAY contribute
-
💯 My point is this: As a physical therapist, for most cases seeing your imaging result DOES NOT HELP ME make an accurate decision about how to work with you to help improve your FUNCTION and/or REDUCE PAIN. So handing me your Xray and then expecting for me to know the best treatment plan for you is not possible
-
💥 I'll get WAY more information from:
-
🔘Watching/assessing how well you MOVE
🔘Assessing your strength
🔘Understanding the physical demands of your work life/hobbies/sport
🔘Listening to how you perceive your problem
🔘Identifying if it is more related to stress/anxiety, depression, or a traumatic experience etc (basically identifying any THREATS in your life that may contribute to your pain experience)
❌Looking at one piece of static film or reading a diagnosis on a piece of paper from your physician
-
💯 So please understand: evaluating and working with YOU as a WHOLE PERSON is INFINITELY MORE EFFECTIVE than trying to treat your Xray (or other imaging) results. It just doesn't work that way!

Sage Sayings: “We say disease when we should say effect; for disease is the effect of a change in the parts of the physical body. Disease in an abnormal body is just as natural as is health when all parts are in place.” Andrew Taylor Still, Research and Practice, p.23.
