Hey all! Haven't heard much from me in here lately... don't worry - I haven't abandoned you! I've just been working on something behind the scenes.
Had some feedback from the first masterclass I released, and since my strong suit is healing & coaching (not so much social media and marketing 🫣) I decided to take your suggestions and re-vamp my masterclass.
I'd love for you to take a peek and let me know what you think 😃
Here are a couple of things I've changed:
1) I shortened it (my number one piece of feedback from the original was that it was too long!)
2) I put my face in there so you know who you're talking to
3) I provided some simple take-aways to help yo get started on your journey to healing your plantar fasciitis right away

So, take 15 mins and check it out. Let me know what you think!

Here's your reminder to drink more water!

As we start to notice changes in the seasons, we may feel less inclined to drink a glass of cold water. You may not get the reminders from your body, the way you would on a hot summer day!

But remember... our bodies are roughly 60% water. So here's your little reminder to stay hydrated.

Write your own post-it note reminder, and stick it somewhere you will see it often.

Anti-Inflammatory Food Highlight: Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The season of soups and stews and roasting is upon us.

I thought I would feature Extra Virgin Olive Oil, as it is often the start of any great fall dish!

There are plenty of studies out there that highlight the benefits of extra virgin olive oil as a part of a healthy diet.

It has been found that olive oil has numerous anti-inflammatory compounds called polyphenols. One of these in particular, called olecanthal has similar effects in the body as Ibuprofen! (and without the nasty side-effects on your stomach and digestive system)

Studies show that polyphenols are also believed to slow down the development of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases as well as cancer. There are many health-promoting properties of polyphenols, including: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-atherogenic, anti-thrombotic, and anti-mutagenic effects… so drizzle away!

Which Type of Olive Oil Has Maximum Nutritional Potency?
When shopping for olive oil, make sure you’re buying extra virgin. It’s the grade that retains the MOST natural phenols (antioxidants) and other health-promoting compounds. All other olive oil grades, such as “virgin,” “pure,” or “light,” have been chemically refined to mask defects. This refining process destroys the healthy phenols that help keep your brain, heart, and arteries healthy.

The Bottle Makes A Difference
Dark glass, frosted or opaque bottles are often a good indication. Avoid clear glass bottles, as natural light causes the oil to lose its antioxidant potency, and causes it to go bad.

Look For A Date Stamp
Also be sure to remember the four most important words whenever you shop for olive oil: the fresher, the better. Avoid buying olive oil from places where the oils sit on the shelf for months (or even years!) growing stale, musty, and rancid. If you see a date stamp on the bottle, you’re likely onto something good. Anything that reveals the harvesting date, or the press date will give you an idea of how long that bottle has been around. Again: the fresher, the better!

So, whether you’re roasting root veggies, grilling fresh fish, or starting a base for a hearty stew - make it more delicious, satisfying and HEALTHY with extra virgin olive oil.

So, it's Thanksgiving in Canada.
What are you THANKFUL for?
I know it's tough, when you're suffering on a daily basis with pain in your feet to even CONSIDER feeling thankful for them... but hear me out...
Think about all of the fun times you've had where your feet took you on adventures.
Hiking with friends or family... traveling to distant countries... dancing at weddings or memorable celebrations. Your feet were there for you!
And now... they need some TLC from you. Even though you may want to just chop them off sometimes... instead, consider showing them some appreciation.
Some THANKS.

Maybe soak them in a warm epsom salt bath.
Or go get a pedicure.
Even just put on some fluffy slippers and put your feet up.
But show them some love for all of the times they weren't at the forefront of your thoughts... because it was during those times that they were silently there, supporting you!

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue that runs under your foot. This band helps to support your arch, and when it becomes overstretched, overused or strained, it pulls on the attachment site at the heel (where people most commonly feel the pain.)
It is typically worst in the mornings when getting out of bed, or after any period of prolonged sitting. Most people comment that they can't put their heel down first thing in the morning.
It can also become very painful at the end of the day, after being on your feet too long.
There are MANY things involved in completely rehabilitating your feet from plantar fasciitis. 3 key steps (In this order) are:
STEP 1: Support your feet to allow the fascia to heal.
STEP 2: Optimize your daily activities to prevent re-occurences. The way we walk, the shoes we wear, the activities we do, the foods we eat, the lifestyle we lead - are all components in the healing process for long term results.
STEP 3: Strengthen your feet. A powerful foot is a healthy foot. But, strengthening while the fascia is painful and inflamed is really difficult to do, so make sure you start by giving the tissues a chance to heal and become less inflamed first.
A few Tips for alleviating Plantar Fasciitis:
Always get the feet moving BEFORE standing on them in the mornings or after any period of prolonged rest. This can be as simple as pointing and flexing the feet, and doing ankle rolls in the morning. (25 rolls in each direction)
During a flare up - wear supportive shoes, and lace them up snug. You should have a pair of indoor shoes as well as outdoor shoes. Wearing supportive shoes ALL DAY, (except when you're in the shower or sleeping) will help to stabilize the arch while the plantar fascia has time to heal.
You can also tape your arches, wear compression socks, wear custom orthotics or arch supports to take the pressure off of the plantar fascia while it heals.
Ice your feet after a long day. (But NEVER first thing in the morning or immediately before standing up!)
Decrease inflammation in your body through dietary changes and staying well-hydrated.
Strengthen your feet so you can prevent future flare ups.

Achilles Tendinitis
Calling runners and weekend warriors! Do you have pain in this spot? Well, it could be Achilles Tendinitis!
Typically caused by repetitive strain, or sudden increases in intensity or duration of activity. (often running, jumping or start-stop activities)
The achilles tendon attaches your calf muscles to your heel bone, and when put under increased strain, causes an overuse injury that can be described as tenderness, stiffness or an ache just above the heel. Like plantar fasciitis, it is often worse in the mornings, and can improve with mild activity. But overdo it with prolonged running, stair climbing or sprinting, and you would experience a worsening in your pain.
A word of caution: Achilles Tendinitis can weaken the tendon, making it more susceptible to a rupture (which requires surgical repair.)
Treatment: Like an ankle sprain - at home treatment includes R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice Compress, Elevate.). Take it easy and give your body time to heal.
Preventing future flare ups:
1. When starting new activites or increasing increasing intensity of activites - GO EASY AND GRADUALLY
2. Always warm up and stretch
3. Alternate high impact (running, jumping) with low impact (swimming, cycling) activites
4. Ensure you have supportive, properly fitting shoes.
