Today, we observe Remembrance Day and honour the courageous men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Their service, sacrifice, and commitment to peace are why we stand free.
The symbol we wear, the red poppy, holds profound significance, rooted in the First World War.
• It was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields,” written by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, who saw the vibrant red poppies flourishing on the battle-scarred earth where soldiers lay buried.
• The poppy’s bright colour against the bleak landscape became a poignant representation of life, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit.
• Today, it is a visual pledge: to never forget, and to support our Veterans and their families, with proceeds from the poppy campaign going directly to Veteran support funds.
Take a moment today to reflect, and wear your poppy close to your heart.
