This probably deserves a permanent spot on this feed …. Because if I’ve learned anything in the last while, it’s not to take myself too seriously.
I’m about to let my sweet fellow colleagues in on a little secret. I’ll preface with, it’s fu***ng hard to build this business. The odds feel a bit stacked against us in this medical world we exist in. Although, I truly believe this is in the midst of a huge shift at the moment… because conservative management of hugely impactful things in the medical system like low back pain is real.
But beyond that, I know that YOU truly care about your patients. You put more than anyone sees into their care and experience in your office. I also know, as much as we want to believe that WE are the common denominator in that equation. It’s not only or just us….
Thankfully we are among a huge pool of ‘allied health’ although these days I’d argue ‘primary health’ professionals that really truly care about the people that come through our doors.
I think we can confidently let go of a few things…
1. That we have to prove ourselves… our care speaks volumes. And it’s not measured by a pain scale…. People genuinely feel CARED for in our spaces. That’s really fu***ng important. So a pat on the back to you. The worlds needs this.
2. If not you, that patient will feel cared for in someone else’s hands….. the pull I felt on a hugely deep level to trade caring for myself/my own babies and others has been gut wrenchingly real. But guess what? Our ability to care for ourselves is so reflective in our work and it shows. Your patients will be okay when and if you need to prioritize yours and your families health first.
3. That some medal will be awarded to the most dedicated, decorated, depleted, depended on care-giver… it’s just simply not true.
Breathe in, shoulders down, head up…. you are doing a great fu***ng job, and you are allowed to let go of any/all of the above and STILL be a phenomenal, impactful doc, AND a whole human being.
…Try a face mask like the one pictured above and try not to laugh at yourself…. I see you and all your hard work, your struggles and the brilliance you lend to the world.
