Sleeping... most of us probably are not getting the hours we need and changing that may be out of our control. The quality of sleep we get is something we can work on with improving our sleep environment, bedtime routine, and knowing how what we do earlier in the day will affect our sleep. Take your Vit D in the morning and get 15 minutes of sun exposure on bare skin.

**Vitamin D for better sleep?**

An interesting pilot study recently looked into whether taking supplemental vitamin D can improve sleep quality and quantity.

Folks were given 50,000 IU of vitamin D every 2 weeks for 8 weeks. This raised their blood levels from 25 ng/mL (62.5 nmol/L) to 37.7 ng/ml (94 nmol/L). The placebo group had blood levels of 27.6 ng/mL (69 nmol/L), which remained unchanged throughout the course of the study.

After 8 weeks, the sleep scores in the vitamin D group improved significantly. While the placebo group saw no change in their sleep.

Now, it's important to keep in mind that this was only an exploratory study. It is far from definitive. But it hopefully opens up a new avenue of vitamin D and sleep research.

When improving your nutrition the "how" and "why" is the first place to start. The "what" and "how much" will follow. This practice will trickle into other areas of your life. Add just a couple minutes to one meal per day and go from there. Put your fork down between bites, chew longer, sip water, talk to those you're eating with. Do this for two weeks and see how you feel.

The benefits of slow eating include better digestion, better hydration, easier weight loss or maintenance, and greater satisfaction with our meals. Meanwhile, eating quickly leads to poor digestion, increased weight gain, and lower satisfaction. The message is clear: Slow down your eating and enjoy…

Sleep.... not a sexy topic that clients like to talk about and one I bring up time and time again! One easy thing to improve is your sleep environment. For you, your spouse, your kids. We need rest to thrive physically, mentally, emotionally and developmentally especially for kids. I came across this solution for complete darkness in the bedroom from Love n' Snuggles - Lactation and Pediatric Sleep Consulting https://www.blackoutez.com/ I am ordering ours this week!

"Action comes before motivation" I cover this topic with almost every client I see. It's about what we do (can and will) not what we intend to do. My job is to help you implement the do into your everyday life, simply and effectively. Most people think you are either motivated or you're not, take a read of this article to learn more about the myth of motivation and better strategies to use.

[NUTRITION TIP OF THE WEEK, from Brian St. Pierre]:

DON'T GET DISTRACTED - FOCUS ON THE BIG ROCKS

As an avid reader of nutrition information, there are several writers whose work I have consistently followed and found enlightening, challenging, and particularly helpful (even if I don't always agree).

One of these writers is Dr. Stephan Guyenet, an expert on the neurobiology of obesity, and author of The Hungry Brain.

In a recent post he wrote a paragraph that I couldn't agree with more, as I have come to the same conclusion over the past 15 years in the field.

“The more I learn about health, the more I tend to focus my attention on a few simple factors that I think account for most of the health benefits of diet and lifestyle. Don’t smoke ci******es or use alcohol excessively. Get regular physical activity. Eat whole foods. Get restorative sleep. Manage stress. And don’t eat too many calories. These guidelines may not be very exciting, but they deliver a lot more value than the details that often distract us.”

In my opinion, the last sentence is gold.

Now, of course, there is a time and a place for focusing on details, but usually only when we have achieved the big rocks.

This might seem easy, but the fact is that less than 3% of Americans meet these basic qualifications, which were specifically defined as:

* 2.5 hours per week of moderate or vigorous activity
* Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day
* A body fat percentage under 20 percent (for men) or 30 percent (for women)
* Don't smoke

And the results are likely similar for most industrialized countries.

We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
