Read ONWA's new MMIWG report: Beyond the Inquiry - ONWA's journey 5 years after the National Inquiry Final Report

It speaks to current challenges in addressing MMIWG include systemic racism, inadequate resources for support and prevention, and the need for comprehensive and culturally sensitive policy reforms and a lack of implementation on the Calls for Justice and the National Action Plan.

More than 1,400 Omushkego members who were placed in Indian Boarding Homes between 1951 and 1992 may be eligible for financial compensation following a federal court settlement on a class-action suit handed down in May 2024.
The Indian Boarding Homes Program was a Government of Canada initiative which placed children from First Nations communities and Inuit villages in other communities (usually non-Indigenous) to stay in private family homes for the purpose of attending public school.
It is estimated 40,000 children across Canada were taken and placed in boarding homes under this program from 1951 to 1992.
In accordance with the recent court settlement, eligible claimants will receive a minimum of $10,000 in compensation. Depending on other factors (for example, if they were abused or experienced varying degrees of hardship) they could receive up to $200,000.
Claimants who would prefer to pursue their own legal action, separate from the recently settled class action suit, can opt out by visiting https://boardinghomesclassaction.com and completing the online opt-out form or downloading a PDF copy and emailing it to the legal counsel, Klein Lawyers LLP, at ibhclassaction@callkleinlawyers.com. The deadline for opting out is July 22.
For more information, visit the website or contact the claims administrator by email at claims@boardinghomesclassaction.com or phone toll free at 1-888-499-1144.
