Such an important item to Repost credit to . Tanning bed use may be at an all-time low, but tanning *culture* is very much on the rise. On TikTok and Instagram, young creators are sharing their “tanning optimization routines,” complete with their favorite tanning accelerators and timed schedules for when to flip over. Crisp bikini tan lines have become a badge of honor amongst a certain Gen Z set.

Writer has a few theories for why the bronzed (or, in many instances, burnt) look is once again highly coveted, despite our increased understanding of the risks of UV exposure. For one, the 2000s have come back to haunt us: low-rise jeans, body glitter, and the very thin, very tan aesthetic are all popular again. “We tan because we feel more confident or ‘prettier’ when we’re tan,” one anonymous college-aged source told us. And what about the accelerated age spots, wrinkles, and potential skin cancer? Repost It’s the first weekend of summer and the exhausting sunscreen misinformation has already begun: On Tuesday, CNN published a story that claimed “few sunscreens meet safety standards,” citing only the EWG, an activist group many doctors and scientists see as a biased source. And this will be just the beginning of the discourse, if last year was any indication: There was the celebrity who swore off SPF under the guidance of a “wellness guru” who cited our ancestors’ lack of Banana Boat as evidence that we don’t need the stuff. (Those ancestors were also dying before the average onset of age of skin cancer.) There were the influencers voicing concerns about the ingredients in sunscreen because your skin absorbs so much of it (“your skin is like a second mouth to your body”), and the ones deciding to go with their own homemade SPF.

Whatever wildness this summer brings, Allure contributor .mcgrath wants to acknowledge both that 1. The world of beauty journalism can be a bit extreme in its sunscreen evangelism and 2. Humans aren’t great at nuance so do we really have a choice? Oh and don’t forget 3: “UV light is a carcinogen any way you slice it,” in the words of dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara.
