The Scott Homestead

The Scott Homestead Living close to the way our ancestors lived: cooking from scratch and raising much of own food. More than soap!

I wanted to share some of the things we've been learning in the kitchen [and around our little homestead!] and trying to go back to the ways Gramma did things with healthy and natural products and healthy eating.

A couple of days ago I was cleaning out the rabbit/rooster barn and the meat bird houses and got a blister on my thumb from the handles of the pitchfork and shovel. The blister hadnt broken so I put honey on the blister and some of my homemade hand lotion and bandaged it up. The next day doing dishes, the bandage came off and the blister was open and the skin came off but it wasn’t an open wound like normal. I put a plain bandage on just to cover and the next day you can hardly tell there was a blister except the redness on my thumb. Unpasturized honey works fantastic on cuts and blisters. It doesn’t have to be the expensive Manuka. Any unpasteurized will do. I use the Costco brand and have used it for 6 years giving up on polysporin completely. That stuff is useless compared to honey. I learned about unpasteurized honey from the Yukon Vet on tv years ago and have used it ever since!

Our daughter is here visiting so we enlisted her to KP duty and she is helping us prep beets for canning lol. Yes, we peel them. Yes I’ve tried the dropping them in boiling water and the skins are supposed to slip off. I’ve tried that several times and it never works, just makes the beets hot and hard to handle. I trim the ends, peel and chop then get them into jars and into the pressure canner.
Yep, our fingers are stained but it’s all part of the homesteading and processing your own food. And we did it quickly with 3 of us doing it and had fun chatting as well while teaching our daughter some things about home food preservation. πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎβ€οΈ

😍 This is the first homegrown layer chick of 2025. This is the 4th generation of chicks on the homestead! πŸ₯° We had no hens go broody this year so I had to be the momma hen and incubate them and turn them several times a day. πŸ₯ΉπŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ˜Ž
