Saturday, October 18th is Alberta Health Care Aide day.

We are so incredibly grateful for the HCAs that are a part of our team. Each person brings such amazing strengths and passion for caregiving that is unmatched.

My mom was a HCA (shout out to Colleen Desaunoy), and I was lucky to learn at a young age about working in health care. However, it is not all sunshine and roses. It would be silly to not acknowledge all the many hurdles HCAs overcome on a day-to-day basis. Many work incredibly long hours providing life sustaining care, often taking a toll on physical and mental health.

HCAs are often the first people our loved ones see in the morning, and the last they see before they lay their heads down at night. They do the work that many of us cannot fathom doing. They take pride in their work, and take time to make a difference in someone's life. They see us in some of our lowest moments, and give selflessly to help. HCAs are amazing to say the least.

So, on a day dedicated to HCAs, "thank you" does not feel like enough. Instead, I want to open this post up to hear from HCAs and those who appreciate them by asking you:

1. If you are not a HCA, please share your thoughts/thank-yous/experiences with HCAs.
2. If you ARE a HCA, please tell us something about you (ideas may include: what you love about being a HCA, something you've overcome, or something you wish for).

💚 World Mental Health Day!

Today, we’re shining a light on the mental health of older adults — a group often overlooked, yet deeply impacted by isolation, grief, and age-related challenges.

In Canada, one in 4 seniors lives with a mental health issue like depression or anxiety — but too many suffer in silence.

Let’s change that.
☑️ Check in on the older adults in your life.
☑️ Advocate for accessible mental health services.
☑️ Break the stigma — age is never a barrier to getting help.
☑️ Learn more about mental health and older adults by visiting ccsmh.ca

Because mental wellness matters at every age. 🧓👵💚

We are on day 3 of attending the Healthy Aging Alberta Summit in Edmonton. An amazing opportunity to connect with others who provide care in the community-based senior serving sector.

A special thank you to Healthy Aging Alberta and Crowsnest Cruisers for supporting my (Jay’s) attendance to learn more (as a member of the Crowsnest Cruisers board). Connecting with others in our field allow us to ensure we are providing the best care and supports sustainable services by keeping up with emerging trends/resources.

The last session presented by Dr. Samir Sinha (a leading expert in geriatrics and policy innovation) brought forth many important topics including community-based care and non-medical supports to promote healthy aging and reduced pressure on the healthcare systems.

I invite you to review the stats in the photos attached that bring attention to some of the needs we face and work to advocate improvement on - including supporting seniors to age well in the Crowsnest Pass.
