In the photo from my time playing at McKendree University or overseas in Sweden, you see the grit, the focus, and the physical drive. What you don’t see is what every athlete carries beneath the jersey: the weight of expectations, the anxiety of a slump, and the silent pressure to always "be okay" for the sake of the team.
I’m Andrew Best, and while I’m a therapist today, I’ll always be a hockey player at heart.
I know what it’s like to tie your entire identity to your performance. I know the "locker room culture" that tells us to ignore pain—physical or emotional. And I know how lonely it can feel when the season ends or an injury happens, and you’re left wondering who you are without the game.
In my practice, I work with athletes and high-performers, who train their body every single day. Therapy is simply training the mind to be just as resilient, flexible, and strong.
If you’re ready to focus on your mental well-being with the same care you give your sport, I’d love to support you. I offer a free 15-minute consultation call to see if we’re a good fit for working together.

It’s easy to believe that the grit we use on the ice is the same tool we need for our mental health—that if we just "tough it out" long enough, the pressure will lift. But as a former athlete, I’ve learned that true resilience comes when we finally give ourselves permission to take the jersey off and be human.
I’m Andrew, and I’m here to offer a non-judgmental space for athletes and high-performers to navigate the unique weight of expectations, performance anxiety, and the transition into life beyond the game. You don’t have to carry the pressure alone.

When the "symptoms" are actually invitations.
Do you ever feel a quiet, persistent sense of searching? Like you’re navigating your daily responsibilities, but a deeper sense of purpose feels just out of reach?

In our culture, we’re often told to just "manage" our anxiety or "get over" our lack of direction. But what if those feelings aren't problems to be solved, but signals from your soul calling for attention?

My name is James, and my work is rooted in the intersection of psychotherapy, spirituality, and the wisdom of the body. I specialize in supporting folks who are navigating:
Existential Transitions: Moving through "what now?" phases of life with courage.
Spiritual Seeking & Wounds: Processing religious experiences or awakening to new perspectives.
Meaning-Making: Moving from a lack of purpose toward a life that feels authentic and integrated.
We don’t just talk about these things from the neck up. By using a somatic approach, we listen to how your story lives in your nervous system. We create a space that is patient, present, and safe enough to lean into the mystery of your own being.

You don’t have to have all the answers before you begin. The path often unfolds as we walk it together.
I am currently accepting new clients for in-person and virtual sessions. If you're ready to explore what's beneath the surface, I’d be honored to walk with you. Visit cpyc.ca to learn more about my psychospiritual approach, book a free consultation or if you are ready book a session with me.

At the Collingwood Psychotherapy & Yoga Centre, we believe that therapy isn't about "fixing" what is broken—it's about "being with" what is real. My role is to be a non-judgmental partner as you explore your inner world, helping you find a sense of grounding and peace.
It is never too late to be heard, to be understood, or to come into a more compassionate relationship with yourself. Whether you’ve been to therapy before or this is a completely new path for you, we will move at a pace that feels safe and respectful.
You have spent a lifetime caring for the world around you. This is a space where you can be cared for, too.
I am currently accepting new clients for in-person and virtual sessions. If you’re curious about how therapy might support you in this season, I invite you to reach out. Let’s start a conversation. Visit cpyc.ca to learn more about my therapy approach, book a free consultation or if you are ready book a session with me. (Links in About)

It’s easy to feel like you should just "get through it" or "move on," but real healing doesn’t have a deadline. In my work, I see these moments not as things to be fixed, but as unique opportunities to truly get to know yourself and your place in the world.
Whether you are navigating:
The heavy quiet of grief
The disorientation of a relationship ending
The uncertainty of a major life shift

I am currently accepting new clients for in-person and virtual sessions. If you’re in a season of transition and feeling the weight of it, I’m here to walk with you. Visit cpyc.ca to learn more about my therapy approach, book a free consultation or if you are ready book a session with me. (Link in About)
