Ragweed season is around the corner. Are you ready???

How are your histamine elimination pathways? Do your mast cells need some help to avoid degranulating like a toddler having a melt down? Does your gut microbiome have balanced organisms or is there a little histamine factory in there? Do you have enough enzymes to break it down in the gut? What about within the cell? Enough cofactors? Are you eating certain foods that put a magnifying glass on the whole chaos?

Chocolate, coffee, tomatoes, strawberries, dairy, fermented foods, etc.

If you want to be proactive... your time is NOW.
We've got all kinds of support, and each case is unique depending on the mix of all of the above.

Maybe a vitamin C IV can help you cope.

Reminder ticks can be small.

And they're becoming more prevalent in our area, with cases of tick-borne illness on the rise.
Most patients with confirmed Lyme don't remember getting bitten!

It's Lyme awareness month. Spread the word.
This tick was crawling on my son's chest, and it's a miracle we found it before it had attached itself. I keep it in my office now to show people how small they can be. It's the size of a flake of pepper.

If you find a tick that requires removal, do so properly! There are great videos online and one in our history you can check out. Most important is to keep it !!! Don't give it to your GP or send it to public health. They rarely test them anymore and if they do, and your results don't get lost (happens often) it takes weeks to get results.
Send your tick to geneticks for private testing (24 to 72 hours depending on the panel). This is the best way to know what you're up against.

You are at risk even if it's not attached for 'that long'. There is a lot of outdated information out there and truthfully, it can be hard to tell how long is been attached.

Lastly, serology tests through public health will only be accurate after 4 to 6 weeks as it tests your immune response, not the pathogen itself. It's also fairly insensitive and misses many cases! Many!

You should talk to someone lyme-literate as soon as you remove a tick. If it's a black legged tick, you need to take swift action.

Help spread the word.

MICROPLASTICS IN THE BRAIN. A 2024 study from the University of Mexico found a shocking 50% increase in the amount of plastics found in the human brain compared to studies 8 years ago!

These small deposits, when combined, amount to approximately the size of a plastic spoon. In conditions with dementia, there was even more plastic than in subjects without.

The brain is very susceptible to plastics, more so than other organs, but increased levels have also been found in the liver.

Current research shows an association between microplastics and serious health issues, including cognitive decline, infertility, immune system disruption, memory loss, hormonal disruptions, and even developmental problems in children.

It seems our convenience lifestyle, synthetic materials, heavy industrialization are all catching up with us at an alarmingly fast rate. Most of this plastic waste is decades old, so it's likely a problem that is here to stay.

Regardless, I encourage you all to become conscious consumers. Doing today for the sake of tomorrow. Choose natural fibers when you can, put reusable cutlery in your purse, pack your travel mug when you buy a coffee, shop used instead of new for toys and other household items.

What are things going to look like in 8 years from now? Will we see another 50% increase in brain plastic?

Research is now looking into what parts of the brain these plastics tend to accumulate and sing of there are links with other neurodegenerative conditions.

Independent of calories - ultra processed foods lead to increased intramuscular fat.

A study presented in the 2024 radiological society of North America meeting found that consuming more ultra processed foods is linked to increased intramuscular thigh, fat, independent of calorie intake or activity. This may increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis, a major global burden on health. While the study didn't exactly examine the impact of diet quality on muscle gains and recovery, it raises important questions about how dietary choices beyond caloric intake may influence long term muscle composition and overall health.

Akkaya 2024

I get into one of many soap boxes when we over simplify dietary needs by caloric intake and I think most people know this intuitively but it's nice now to see when we focus in, that processed foods are much much worse for our overall health and this goes beyond what calorie counting can account for.

After all, we don't digest our food by incineration. And that's the basis of calorie theory. "The sample of food is placed in an insulated oxygen filled chamber that is surrounded by water. The chamber is called a bomb calorimeter. The sample is burned completely. The heat from the burning increases the temperature of the water, which is measured and which indicates the number of calories in the food"

Eat real food.

Reproductive aging..... what happens to cause menopause?

People born with ovaries are born with a finite number of oocytes (eggs). The ovaries of a female fetus contain 6 to 7 million oocytes at 20 weeks gestation. 1 to 2 million at birth and 300,000-500,000 at puberty. Did you know that cycling women only actually ovulate about 400 to 500 oocytes in their lifetime??? Loss of oocytes happens through ovulation and atresia (a.k.a degeneration or resorption) and really is what leads to reproductive aging.

Isn't this interesting? So what happens in Perimenopause? Well we have AMH and inhibit B which are kinda luke brakes.... they prevent the maturation of oocytes. As we get into perimenopause both of these decrease meaning the brakes kinda fall off and you start to go through more rapid and intense periods of follicle maturation. This can result in more time spent in the luteal phase, higher and unopposed estrogen levels low progesterone and cycle length changes. As this continues, a Rollercoaster of estrogen will eventually ensure... sometimes it'll be high, and sometimes it'll be low. The follicle pool will be drained after this accelerated development process and menopause will come.

This really is a fascinating time from a biologicalperspective, knowing the science helps us to place what is happening and why so we can best support you through the transition.

Perimenopause starts when there are slight changes to your cycle length and lasts until you're 1 year after your very last menstrual period.

Did you know there are approximately 100 trillion microbes in the human gut? That is 10x the number of microbial cells in the gut than in the whole human body.

The human gut microbiota work together to aid in digesting food and absorbing nutrients, orchestrate our immune system, influence how our brain works and grows, and affect our personality and feelings.

When these colonies fall out of balance, it can lead to what is called "dysbiosis".

Typically, if a small imbalance occurs, symptoms can be as simple as a passing upset stomach. However, if this imbalance in the microbial community grows, it increases your risk of developing more serious health complications.

Recent studies have linked dysbiosis to gut disorders including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, food intolerances, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, as well as mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD, and conditions including chronic fatigue, inflammation and aching joints, acne, skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis, and obesity.

There are tests that can tell you exactly what's going on in your gut, including your microbiome and markers of gut health and inflammation, stomach acidity, and enzyme production, which identify key treatment targets to provide sustainable, optimal health.
