It might seem strange that clicking a mouse or scrolling through a phone can cause "Tennis Elbow" when you aren't exactly swinging a racket. However, the condition is less about the sport and more about repetitive micro-trauma and static loading of the extensor tendons in your forearm.

Your physiotherapist may recommend self-myofascial release tools (massage tools) to help relieve muscle tightness, improve range of motion, enhance bodily awareness, and support recovery. Massage balls, foam rollers, and massage sticks are examples of tools which can help you maintain mobility between treatments. Your PT will advise on which tool might be right for you and how to use it!

Many people are familiar with the acronym R.I.C.E for injury recovery; however, research has shown that this method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) can actually delay healing time. This is because icing or other anti-inflammatory agents restrict blood flow, which may temporarily reduce pain but also prolongs healing time, and resting too long can lead to muscle stiffness and atrophy. The new acronym (PEACE & LOVE) ☮️💟 emphasizes the importance of early movement and vascularization. PEACE refers to the acute phase of injury (the first 1-3 days) when you should take it easy, elevate the injury to drain fluid, compress to reduce swelling, and get education surrounding the healing process. After the first few days, we implement LOVE to introduce weight bearing, a positive mindset, aerobic activity to increase blood flow, and tailored exercise.

Do you ever wonder why you keep stretching the same muscle, yet it remains persistently tight?

Stretching is great- it can help elongate tight & sore muscle fibres by bringing blood flow and oxygen to the area, which in turn improves range of motion. However, when tightness persists, we must investigate why! Tightness may actually be a result of weakness. When muscles are weak, they often compensate by remaining in a contracted state to provide more stability. A physiotherapist can help you identify imbalances and create an exercise plan to strengthen tight muscles.

Did you know there is a clinical reason why you may feel low mood and low energy during the colder months? 🥶😔😴

It’s called S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder). Changes in daylight can disrupt our circadian rhythm, consequently affecting our levels of serotonin and melatonin (the hormones that affect our sleep and mood). However, there are ways to reduce these symptoms, such as getting outside, even on cloudy days, purchasing a daylight lamp, ensuring adequate vitamin D intake, staying active, and maintaining a consistent sleep-wake schedule. Although, if you are experiencing severe symptoms, seek medical help from a therapist or a doctor!

Kin vs PT: Who Do I Book With? 🤔

That’s a great question! There is some overlap between services. Generally, physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat physical injuries and dysfunction, while kinesiologists focus on exercise prescription, biomechanics, and building long-term strength and movement.

Physiotherapists and kinesiologists often work together to support your recovery, and fortunately, at CKP, we have both!

Not sure who’s right for you? Chat with our front desk, and we’ll help guide you. 💬
