If your summer productivity disappears every winter… congratulations, you’re biologically normal.
Winter isn’t the time for peak output; it’s the time for shorter days, warmer drinks, earlier nights, and saying no without a 3-paragraph explanation. ❄️

Gentle Winter Self-Care:
• Warm drinks over cold drinks
• Earlier nights
• Fewer commitments

Which means more permission to:
• Move more slowly without explaining why
• Work in shorter, deeper blocks
• Prioritize recovery over output

And more permission to NOT:
• Keep summer-level momentum
• Be constantly available
• Say yes out of habit

Winter care looks different. What if you honoured that?

Self-compassion, as defined by Kristin Neff, isn’t about ignoring what’s hard or lowering your standards.

It’s made up of three simple practices:

1️⃣ Self-kindness instead of harsh self-judgment
2️⃣ Common humanity: remembering you’re not alone in your struggle
3️⃣ Mindfulness: noticing what’s here without minimizing or overwhelming it

At Cove Counselling & Co, we often remind clients that self-compassion isn’t something you either have or don’t, it’s something you practice, moment by moment. ✨️

It’s not just techniques or strategies. It’s about connection.

Feeling truly seen, heard, and understood creates safety, and safety is where healing begins.

When you’re met without judgment, your nervous system can soften, and real change becomes possible.

Therapy isn’t about fixing you. It’s about being supported as you are.

You don’t have to do this alone.

If you’re looking for a space where you can feel heard and supported, we’re here when you’re ready. ❤️

“New year, new me.” Often creates stress, comparison, and burnout, not real change.

Letting go of unrealistic expectations reduces anxiety and builds self-compassion.

Real progress comes from small, realistic steps, not perfection. 🧡

Gentle, sustainable growth lasts.

What’s one small step you’re choosing this year?

Connection doesn’t have to be loud or crowded...

Sometimes it’s a quiet conversation, a shared walk, or simply knowing someone understands.

At Cove Counselling & Co., we hold space for gentle togetherness.

Think of one person in your life who helps you feel grounded and safe to be yourself.

Here are a couple of ways to calm your nervous system before responding when you're angry...

1️⃣ Pause,
Take a breath (or ten) before reacting.

2️⃣ Ask yourself:
What’s really underneath this anger?

3️⃣ Try saying:
“I feel…” instead of “You always…”

Anger often hides hurt.

Listen for what needs healing.

Think of your emotional “cove” as a place of calm, protection, and belonging. Even when the world feels stormy, you can return to this inner shore. 🌳

We chose this name for our clinic very intentionally.

Is there something that helps you return to your own sense of calm and safety?

The holidays often come with shoulds...

How we should feel, show up, give, or connect. But peace comes when we soften those expectations and move toward what feels true for us instead of what feels obligatory.

What “should” are you ready to release this year?

One minute you’re laughing over dinner, the next you’re crying into the mashed potatoes. It’s called being human. 💛

If you’re grieving, you might find yourself caught between wanting to participate and needing to pull back.

Give yourself permission to feel it all; to celebrate, to cry, to rest.

Healing and grief often walk side by side.

How might you care for your heart this holiday season?

The holidays can bring both warmth and ache...

Joy for what is, and grief for what is no longer.

It’s okay if your season looks different this year.

You don’t need to force cheerfulness or hide your pain. Your feelings are valid, and you’re not alone. 💚

What helps you honour those you miss during the holidays?

Rest isn’t a reward for productivity...

It’s a basic need.

As the holidays approach, remember that slowing down doesn’t mean falling behind.

What might rest look like for you this season?
