If I can’t have people in the Lab, might as well film more dissection to be able to share with a larger audience. Empty Lab but not idle!

Recently, there was a very in-depth investigation on the TV show W5 about fraudulent usage of human cadavers. The investigation focused on an individual named Arthur Rathburn, the owner of International Biological Inc.. This man procured donated cadavers from a large donor program, Biological Resource Center of Illinois in Chicago, and then sold individual parts to researchers and educators, some tissue coming to Canada. He did this without the knowledge of donor family members as they entrusted their loved ones to the program in Chicago. He also did not follow or comply with legal requirements regarding infectious disease screening for tissue entering Canada.

Somatic Explorations has NEVER utilized the services of International Biological Inc or Biological Resource Center of Illinois. Somatic Explorations has always put the dignity, respect and protection of the donors first and foremost! We have spent a vast amount of time researching and choosing where all of the donor tissue comes from that is utilized at Somatic Explorations. With that in mind and for full transparency, all specimens that have come from the United States has been procured through Life Legacy and United Tissue Network. Both organizations are non-profit and fully compliant with the American Association of Tissue Banks. It is important to the Lab that all tissue that enters Somatic Explorations Inc. is freely donated. The Lab only deals with donor programs that interact directly with donor families.

Somatic Explorations Inc. is fully complaint with all laws in Canada. We have even been fortunate enough to have had organizations referred to the Lab from the University of British Columbia.

The ONLY reason participants can experience the amazing learning that happens at Somatic Explorations is because of the incredibly generous gifts of our donors and their families. These selfless individuals deserve our utmost respect and gratitude!

HAPPY 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!!
I find it hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Somatic Explorations held it’s first class!
It has been a category 5 roller coaster ride but I LOVE what I do and am so grateful for all the support. From all the time spent at SFU studying, fighting with the governments (No, I don’t think I should be zoned into the Coquitlam Centre!), finding donors, pleading with potential landlords, and then opening 7 weeks before the largest recession since the Great Depression it was worth it.
I need to thank my family, Ron Garvock and Randy Persad for involving Utopia Academy from the get-go, all of my early supporters / cheerleaders, and every health care professional that was brave enough to walk through the door of the Lab. Without you all, it never would have been possible. I stand on the shoulders of a lot of people to attain my dream!!!!!

Construction to reconfigure the Lab, sever the warehouse for future sublet, and installing a grossing station is obviously under way!

Well, the Lab is a little bit of a mess today.......

Had a senior Vancouver Massage Therapy College class in the Lab today and played the final round of 'What did you see / learn / experience / feel' share. One of the participants made reference to being a 'body mechanic and seeing what we actually treat'. My thought was........ would I pay a mechanic $120 / hr if he studied carburetors out of a manual and pictures but never actually saw one before I drove my car into the shop?!?!?!?!??!

Had a FANTASTIC morning at Port Moody Secondary sharing anatomy with their grade 12 Bio students. I was stunned at what they knew and was incredibly proud of myself because I got 30 seventeen year olds to say 'Wow / Awesome / Cool / Thank You'.

WOW! Had an INCREDIBLE group in the Lab and saw a ton of amazing things. Many thanks to the people that went on the adventure with me and a humble 'Thank You' to the amazing teacher and his family or allowing us to explore.

Starting the second half of a 6-day dissection tomorrow. Can't wait to reconnect with everyone and explore new and exciting things. Our donor has been incredible so far and has taught so much!

Had a great day in the Lab with part of the Cross-Fit team from next door. I think they are rather surprised at what I do 'on the other side of the wall'.
They all seemed stoked to see what they affect every day. I am guessing that the WAD will be fine tuned a little bit every day.
DAMN I LOVE WHAT I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
