We would like to recognize two heroes in healthcare who were presented with Guardian Angel awards recently! The Guardian Angel program celebrates those who have made a significant difference in the lives of their patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

Dr. Crystal Blanchard and Dr. Jill Carpenter do this every day and were recently recognized for their phenomenal work.

Dr. Blanchard's nominator (for her fourth award!) shared their experience and gratitude with us as follows: "Thank you for being there for me prior to labour and after. You were so good to me and made me feel comfortable as a first time mom! Thank you for being my Guardian Angel. Your care and kindness is something I will never forget!!"

Dr. Carpenter's nominator (for her third award!) talked about her kindness and how wonderful she always is to her patients and wanted to simply say: "OUTSTANDING SERVICE!"

Pictured are Crista Brake, Dr. Blanchard's Admin Assistant; Dr. Crystal Blanchard, Guardian Angel Recipient; Suzanne Carey, Executive Director of the Western Regional Hospital Foundation who presented the awards; Dr. Jill Carpenter, Guardian Angel Recipient; and Suzanne Abbott, Dr. Carpenter's Admin Assistant.

We would like to recognize another hero in healthcare who was presented with a Guardian Angel award recently! The Guardian Angel program celebrates those who have made a significant difference in the lives of their patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty. Stephanie King has been recognized for her phenomenal work recently.

Stephanie's nominator shared their experience and gratitude with us as follows: "Stephanie, when we first met, you spoke plain, simple language that conveyed the crucial message of caring. You let us know that the team had already brainstormed ways that they could help my wife feel comfortable. In this initial exchange, you also carefully read body language, and through use of your calm and steady voice, you were able to quickly build a rapport of trust while also being sure to give agency.

The skills that you displayed are difficult to teach: you showed your ability to speak plainly in complex situations, to respond empathetically, and to remain calm in emotionally-charged environments. Because these skills are difficult to teach, they often are ones that come naturally to a person, or are acquired through years of experience. You were sure to transfer the trust that we felt toward you to your colleagues on the unit who, in turn, demonstrated that they were more than worthy of that same trust.

Stephanie, you are a member of a team of exceptional care providers. I believe that you occupy a special role within this team: you are modest, deeply observant, and unbelievably attuned to the emotions that are being felt by your patients and their families. Your communication is the superpower that you contribute to an exceptional team. You are a most worthy recipient of the Guardian Angel award."

Pictured (L-R, F-B) are Sandra Lush, Regional Manager of Spiritual Health; Michelle King, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Palliative Care; Carla McKenzie, Manager of Patient Services for Palliative Care; Stephanie King, Guardian Angel recipient; Stephanie's nominator; and Suzanne Carey, Executive Director, WRH Foundation.

Congratulations on your Guardian Angel award, Stephanie, and thank you for the wonderful care, kindness and compassion you provide.

We would like to recognize another hero in healthcare who was presented with a Guardian Angel award recently! The Guardian Angel program celebrates those who have made a significant difference in the lives of their patients, often going above and beyond the call of duty. Rosana Cozier has been recognized for her phenomenal work recently.

Rosana's nominators shared their experience and gratitude with us as follows: "Rosana, you provided exceptional care to my husband during his time in ICU. Every day you assessed his limits and knew when to push a little and when to let him rest. You adjusted the bed every day to get him in the proper position. This was significant because it was the most comfortable he felt in months, since he was admitted to hospital. You went above and beyond in ensuring his care came first and kept this at the forefront in every decision you made. You both created an undeniable bond. It was both entertaining to hear you banter in the most fun-loving way, and also to see your respect and admiration for each other. You both have sons with the same name, which I’m sure was the start of your conversations and this progressed to a special connection between nurse and patient. With your years of experience we could easily see that you knew exactly what care he required. Thank you Rosana for being the best in the nursing field and our Guardian Angel. We will never forget the care you provided in ICU; it was exceptional."

Pictured (L-R) are Maxine McGrath, Manager of ICU Patient Services; Rosana Cozier, Guardian Angel Recipient; Angela Butt, ICU Care Facilitator; and Suzanne Carey, Executive Director, WRH Foundation.

Congratulations on your Guardian Angel award, Rosana, and thank you for the wonderful care, kindness and compassion you provide.
