Why kids with ADHD have messy rooms and what parents can do to help them tackle the mess before it gets to be overwhelming.

It's likely you were not specifically taught how to regulate your nervous systems. We were taught to push through.
Calm down. Hold it together.

But the body doesn't work that way. Humans are wired for play, connection, movement, rhythm, and nature. They are how our nervous systems find felt safety.
And felt safety changes everything. When you feel safe, your brain stops scanning for threat and starts opening up.
You become curious instead of reactive. Flexible instead of rigid. Present instead of just surviving the day.

That's where real teaching happens, and that's when learning actually lands.

When we talk about meltdowns, we’re not talking about defiance or misbehaviour. We’re talking about a child whose nervous system has hit overload.

This quote is a reminder that behind every intense moment is a young person doing the best they can with feelings that feel too big to carry alone.

💕 Childhood memories usually aren’t about the big things. They’re about the feeling of growing up with you.

Years from now, children won’t remember whether the house was perfect or every moment went smoothly. What often stays with them are the emotional experiences that shaped their sense of safety and belonging.

-> Did I feel safe?
-> Did someone listen to me?
-> Was I comforted when I was overwhelmed?
-> Did we laugh and play together?

Children build their understanding of the world through everyday moments — how we respond when they struggle and how they felt in our presence.

✨ It’s not perfection that shapes childhood memories. It’s connection and the feeling of home.

🌿 Something simple can have a powerful impact on a child’s brain: time outside.

Research shows that even a 20-minute walk outdoors can increase activity in brain areas linked to attention, learning, and emotional regulation 🧠.

When children move, explore, and take in natural environments, their brains often shift into a state that is more alert, more focused, and more ready to learn.

Nature does something screens and structured environments often can’t:

🌱 It gently engages the senses
🌬️ It regulates the nervous system
🧠 It supports attention and cognitive function

For many children, time outside isn’t just recreation — it’s brain support.

Sometimes the most helpful thing for a child who is restless, overwhelmed, or struggling to focus is surprisingly simple:

☀️ Go for a walk
☀️ Play outside
☀️ let their brain reset in nature

Before we ask our child to change, we need to look at how we respond.
Regulation leads regulation. 💛

What are your thoughts?

02/21/2026

Some children don’t just dislike criticism — they feel undone by it.
A small correction, a friend saying no, or a moment of exclusion can land as deep rejection.

This isn’t being dramatic or fragile.
It’s a nervous system reacting to the fear of disconnection.

Rejection sensitivity often shows up in childhood and, without support, can quietly follow someone into adulthood — shaping relationships, confidence, and behaviour in ways that are frequently misunderstood.

Healing Conversations...Pathway to change and well-being

Online teletherapy is available and delivered on a private and secure video platform. To book your appointment go to: https://traceywade.noustalk.com/.

Healing Conversations evolved from the desire to provide quality mental health services to the community, that are accessible & affordable for those who need them, when they need them. People shouldn't have to wait weeks and months for help. Long wait lists put people's mental and physical well-being at risk and create unnecessary stress and hardship for loved ones. Optimal health cannot be realized without mental wellness.
