In a recent NSW newsletter, Lauren broke down some ways that night shifters can keep more of their money šŸ’ø

Here are three of the budgeting tips she shared for managing an unpredictable schedule:

1ļøāƒ£Start with your baseline.
Figure out your bare minimum income—what you’re guaranteed to make, even in a light paycheck month. Build your budget around this number so you know you can always cover the essentials.

2ļøāƒ£Categorize your expenses. When things get tight, you’ll know where to trim first.
Needs: Rent, utilities, groceries, transportation.
Wants: Streaming services, takeout, non-essential shopping.
Savings: Emergency fund, big goals, or retirement contributions.

3ļøāƒ£Plan for the highs and lows.
When you work overtime or extra shifts, treat that extra money like a bonus—not your regular income. Put it toward savings, debt, or a future splurge.

Lauren here, and in case you haven't heard the exciting news: my new eBook is out!!

I created this one for the newbie night shifters out there in search of some guidance before they step out into the exciting (slightly scary?) world of night shifts.

I do not remember the specifics of my very first night shift since it was 18 years ago. But here’s what I do remember: the fear beforehand.

In the days before my first night shift, I ran through so many what-ifs: What if I couldn't sleep enough before my shift? What if I fell asleep halfway through? What if I threw up from sleep deprivation (as was my tendency)? Or what if I couldn’t think straight and therefore couldn’t remember any of my training?

In the end, it turned out completely fine—but I still wish I had someone to answer all those questions and help calm my pre-shift jitters. That’s why I’ve created this ebook to give you all the big sister guidance you deserve.

You’ll find tips and tricks, action plans, and printable cheat sheets to guide you through your first shift.

I’ve created this one with lots of love for my new night shifters out there, and I hope you love it! Grab your early bird copy for $10 USD until March 31, 2025—link in bio! šŸ’›

Staying Healthy on the Night Shift

The inspiration behind Night Shift Wellness started 10+ years ago when I worked rotating shift work at a hospital. Over the following years, a few things happened. First, I experimented with blogging for a while and wrote a single post on how to eat healthily while working nights. I was blown away by the response to it. I realized there was a real interest in how to thrive on shift work.

Then more recently, I watched a neighbour fail at night shift work within four days. He left a job that he hated and tried to transition to a ā€œbetterā€ job – on nights. He quit by the end of the week because he couldn’t sort out his sleep schedule. I knew he might have been able to adapt and thrive if he’d just had some common sense help from other shift workers. It was a small thing that gave me a big nudge to get more serious about developing Night Shift Wellness. Finally, I found myself once again on night shift last year. My interest in how to thrive on shift work took on new urgency – how to sleep better, eat healthily and stay fit while working nights. I wanted to create a place for shift workers to gather information and learn from one another.

So my goal with all of this is to help shift workers fight back against the ill effects of night shift work by arming themselves with sensible solutions. And that’s how I ended up here – creating a blog (nightshiftwellness.com), posting on here and IG, publishing my first Amazon book, and interviewing other amazing night shift warriors.

Please feel free to leave comments, ask questions and share your own shift work experiences. We can all learn from each other.
