Hi there! Its been a while since I started this journey and I think it’s about time I do another introduction post!
My name is Sarah-Jane! I am a registered dental hygienist with 14 years experience in clinical hygiene. I’m a twin mom (photo is of my twins and I on vacation this year) and my most recent has is as an oral myofunctional therapist.
I decided to continue my education and study oral myofunctional therapy (OMT) because I myself was tongue tied, snoring and mouth breathing and my almost 7 year old is still sucking her thumb and riddled with oral dysfunctions! I wanted to learn more about it and see how I could help us and others.
I had my tongue tie revised last summer and my little one has been using a myo munchee and doing a modified myo program, but will require orthodontic intervention at this point!
Most people don’t know what OMT is. Which is fair because I didn’t until I started this journey!
Oral myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a type of therapy designed to address improper patterns of muscle function in the mouth and face. It involves exercises that focus on strengthening and retraining the muscles of the tongue, lips, and jaw, as well as correcting behaviors that might impact oral health, breathing, swallowing, and speech. OMT is commonly used to treat issues such as:
Tongue thrusting – where the tongue pushes against the teeth during swallowing.
Mouth breathing – which can be linked to sleep disorders, facial development issues, and orthodontic concerns.
Swallowing dysfunction – where the tongue or other muscles are not coordinating properly during swallowing.
Speech issues – where improper tongue posture or muscle patterns affect articulation.
Posture problems – as the tongue’s position can influence overall posture and the alignment of the jaw and neck.
I would be happy to discuss individual concerns with anyone via a complimentary discovery call. Please feel free to reach out to Epione Health with any questions or booking inquiries!
