In early February 2025, we sent a letter to Minister Michelle Thompson seeking a firm commitment from the Ministry of Health and Wellness regarding the proposed partnership between the MacLeod Group and the Atalanta Hospice Society (AHS). This initiative aims to establish an integrated long-term care facility with a dedicated hospice wing in Cornwallis Park.
This project holds immense economic and social potential for the region, particularly in revitalizing the Annapolis Basin Conference Centre (ABCC). The ABCC could provide accommodations for families and friends visiting patients in both the long-term care facility and hospice, fostering a stronger support network. With a formal commitment and a clear construction timeline within the next one to two years, AHS would be well-positioned to secure substantial private-sector funding, making the project a compelling investment for local businesses.
Since its founding in 2017, AHS has worked diligently to advance this initiative, yet progress has been hindered by a lack of clear commitment and direction from the Government of Nova Scotia. To clarify, AHS is not requesting funding for the hospice wingβs construction but rather seeking formal endorsement and approval to proceed with its development in Cornwallis Park.
Unfortunately, the response from the Seniors and Long-Term Care (SLTC) department did not fully address our concerns. The SLTC reaffirmed its commitment to renovating and building 5,700 new single-bed rooms, including the replacement of the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, with work anticipated to begin in 2026. However, the SLTC was unable to guarantee support for the Cornwallis Park development, stating that the service provider (MacLeod Group) must conduct a successful technical evaluation of prospective sites and provide justification for their preferred location to the Department for formal review and approval prior to proceeding.
Despite this, we remain optimistic and will continue to pursue the AHS initiative with a "wait and see" approach. All funds raised to date remain secure in the AHS account, and we will continue accepting donations to strengthen our capital fund.
Thank you all for your ongoing interest and support. We remain hopeful that this initiative will come to fruition in the near future.
