Independence isn’t doing it alone—it’s choosing how you’re supported.

For many older adults, independence is about more than living at home. It’s about having the choice to decide how and when to receive support. Sometimes that means a little help with personal care, meal preparation, or transportation. Other times, it’s the comfort of knowing someone is there to lend a hand, offer companionship, or ensure safety at home.

At Home Instead, we believe independence is rooted in dignity, respect, and choice. Our Care Professionals support older adults across the Comox Valley, Campbell River and North Vancouver Island with services designed to make life safer, more comfortable, and more connected—without taking away what matters most: control over daily life.

If you or a loved one could benefit from personalized support at home, we’d love to help. Call us today at 250-338-0554 or learn more here → https://www.homeinstead.ca/home-care/can/bc/courtenay/3049/?countryRedir=1

Living Well with Heart Disease ❤️

Living with heart disease doesn’t mean pressing pause on a good life. With a few steady habits, many older adults stay active, connected, and confident at home.

Gentle movement—like a stroll to the mailbox or light stretches in a chair—keeps energy up. Heart-friendly meals with more veggies and less salt support your day. A simple pillbox, calendar reminders, and a ride to appointments help medications stay on track. And don’t overlook calm: slow breathing, favourite music, or a friendly chat can ease stress.

In the Comox Valley, Campbell River and across North Vancouver Island, our Care Professionals offer thoughtful, everyday support—meal prep, companionship, light exercise, medication reminders, and transportation—so you or your loved one can focus on living well, not just managing a condition.

: Baking 🍞

Companionship that promotes independence and old memories of familiarity.

Under our Companionship services, Home Instead Care Pros support each step to promote independence and old memories of familiarity, while also helping with nutritional needs. The cozy smells of baking can gently enhance appetite, turning a simple activity into meaningful nourishment—body and soul.

Why baking matters:
• Awakens the senses (sight, touch, and those warm kitchen smells)
• Encourages routine and purposeful movement
• Sparks conversation and memory through familiar recipes
• Supports nutrition with simple, balanced bakes or snack-size portions
• Builds confidence—small successes add up to big independence
What a visit can look like
• Choosing a memory-rich (and nutrient-friendly) recipe together
• Safe set-up and tidy prep (hand-washing, clear counters)
• Measuring and mixing with gentle guidance
• Adaptive tools to support comfort and independence
• Oven safety, clean-up help, and a relaxing tea-and-tasting moment

Safety & dignity first:
We follow food-safe practices, work at your loved one’s pace, and use adaptive tools when helpful—so baking remains enjoyable, comfortable, and safe.

This is why we walk. 💜

When Michelle’s dad, Don, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 69, her family’s world changed forever. Over 10 years, she watched him go from living at home with caregivers to assisted living, and eventually to an Alzheimer’s unit before he passed away at age 79.

Earlier this year, dementia touched her family again when Michelle’s mom, Sandy, had a stroke and heart attack that rapidly advanced her dementia. Now in memory care, Michelle visits Sandy every evening. Despite these challenges, she finds gratitude: “Even though my mom has changed, I’m still creating memories with her.”

For Michelle, Walk to End Alzheimer’s is about honoring her parents and connecting with others. Each year, she joins her Home Instead team and others in the senior care community to walk not in sadness, but in hope for a cure.

It’s because of passionate people like Michelle that Home Instead, a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gold National Team, has raised nearly $5.5 million over the past 17 years — including $280,000 just last year — to advance critical Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

Together with the , we’re fighting for a future without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Let’s make 2025 our most impactful year yet. 💪

It’s hotter than a pepper sprout out there! 🥵

And while we’re all reaching for iced drinks and fans, older adults need a little extra care to stay safe in the summer heat.

Here’s your caregiver-approved summer safety toolkit for aging loved ones:

💧 Hydrate with variety – Water is essential, but try chilled fruit, herbal iced tea, smoothies, or even popsicles to keep it fun and refreshing.

👒 Dress smart – Light, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats help regulate temperature and protect sensitive skin.

🌬️ Cool it down – If there’s no AC, use fans, cold washcloths, or even a bowl of cool water for hands and wrists to provide quick relief.

🌿 Time outdoor activities wisely – Early mornings or evenings are safest. A short stroll, porch chat, or birdwatching can bring joy without overheating.

👂 Connect with care – Sometimes, just being present — listening, sharing a memory, or sitting together — is the best form of comfort.

Let’s keep our older adults safe, seen, and supported this summer.
