St. John Ambulance seeks new Comox Valley volunteers
Support local events, learn advanced first aid and build employment skills

St. John Ambulance Comox Valley is looking for people 15 and up to join its volunteer team. Volunteers play an important role at public events across the region.

Volunteers provide professional first aid coverage at events that keep both attendees and participants safe.

All volunteers learn and practice advanced first aid skills. No prior experience is needed, new members receive training and ongoing mentorship that helps build confidence. These real world skills can be applied at home, work, in the community and can help save lives.

Help out at major community events such as trail races, outdoor fairs, sporting events, markets, parades and concerts. Volunteers work in teams with event organizers and first responders while using radios, completing reports and demonstrating leadership skills while under pressure.

The experience can be added to resumes and applications for jobs, scholarships and post-secondary programs.

There are personal benefits as well. Students gain experience and service hours. Working adults develop professionally while expanding local networks. Retirees stay active, sharp and socially connected. Above all, volunteers experience the deep satisfaction of knowing their actions may help save a life and allow events to run safely for everyone.

β€œYou may join to give back, but you stay because the training is excellent, the team is welcoming, and the moments when your skills make a difference are unforgettable,” said Ben Douglas, long-term volunteer.

Typical commitments include weekly training nights to learn and practise advanced first aid, followed by team shifts on evenings or weekends at community events. Training resumes Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., beginning Sept. 11. Uniforms and equipment are provided.
