Untreated sleep apnea and weight gain can be linked.

For many people with OSA, they create a cycle that looks like:

Weight gain ➡️ airway obstruction and reduced lung capacity ➡️ OSA ➡️ hormone imbalance and reduced energy ➡️ weight gain… and repeat.

Proper treatment can help break the cycle!

Staying consistent with your CPAP can help support weight management by improving sleep quality, energy levels, and metabolism.

Have you stopped using your CPAP regularly?

It’s not too late to get back into consistent CPAP therapy!

If you’ve fallen out of the habit of using your CPAP, following these tips will help you re-establish a successful CPAP habit.

1️⃣ Update us on any major health changes. When your weight fluctuates, or new symptoms present themselves, it’s important that we know so we can alter your therapy to address your current situation accurately.

2️⃣ Take it slow and be consistent. You don’t have to immediately start wearing your CPAP at bedtime. Try wearing your CPAP when you’re awake and relaxing during the day to get used to the feel of the machine again.

3️⃣ Don’t settle for an uncomfortable experience. If your mask is too tight or loose or the air pressure is off, let us know so we can adjust it! The more comfortable your CPAP experience is, the more likely you will continue using it.

4️⃣ Keep your equipment clean and well-maintained. When hoses get dirty, switch them out. Ensure you regularly wash your mask so it looks and feels clean every time you use it.

5️⃣ Create a nighttime routine that includes your CPAP. Going to bed at roughly the same time every night and repeating the same steps––like brushing your teeth, reading a book, putting on your CPAP, and turning out the lights––makes it easier to remember your CPAP.

6️⃣ Track how often you use your CPAP and celebrate your wins! If you made it 7 days in a row, treat yourself to a little reward. Turn it into a competition and see if you can beat your record!

Using your CPAP regularly is the best way to treat your OSA. Don’t be afraid to get back into the routine, even if it’s been a while since you’ve used yours.

Did you know?

Weight loss—whether through lifestyle changes, surgery, or medications—can improve some of the symptoms of your obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). But for most people, it’s not a complete solution for treating sleep apnea. Sleep apnea isn’t just about weight; factors like airway anatomy and muscle tone also play a significant role.

If you’re using CPAP, staying consistent with your therapy can support weight management by improving sleep quality, energy levels, and metabolism.

It’s time to pack your bags!

Pack your CPAP like a pro and sail through the airport, or navigate a road trip with your machine like a pro.

You can pack your CPAP in its case and bring it as a carry-on. This will keep your machine protected and easy to carry at all times.

You should always have all documentation–your prescription and your doctor’s contact information–with you in case you need to show it to airline personnel.

If you’re flying and your machine is in airplane mode, switch it on when you board the plane.

The key to travelling with your CPAP is to be prepared, keep your machine out of your checked luggage, and have extra accessories in case something breaks or is lost in transit.

PSA: The clocks sprung forward on Sunday!

It may only be an hour, but even a minor time change can alter your sleep schedule.

Be sure to follow the process for updating your CPAP’s clock in your machine’s manufacturing manual.

Don’t assume it will automatically change, as some machines require a manual update.

If you’re having trouble adjusting to your new bedtime, try adjusting your schedule by 15 minutes, one day at a time, to gradually let your body adjust to the new time.

March Break is coming up, but your CPAP therapy is not on vacation.

When travelling, the most important thing to remember is to pack and take your CPAP.

It may be a little cumbersome, but taking a break from your CPAP therapy can negatively affect your health and is not recommended.

If you’re flying, pack your CPAP in a carry-on instead of your checked bag. This way, you’ll have it if your bag is lost in transit.

You should always bring a small bottle of distilled water, no matter how you’re travelling. Just remember that you can’t fly with more than 100mL in your carry-on.
