The first perfume maker that was documented was a chemist named Tapputi from Mesopotamia. She used flowers, resins, and spices. She extracted the plants and flowers by distilling them, the same way a lot of essential oils are extracted today. It wasn't until the 20th century that the shift happened from purely natural scents to incorporating synthetics. Now, the shift is happening back. People are interested in using natural perfumes not only for fragrance but for therapeutic and spiritual qualities as well.
