Cavities don’t always hurt. That’s part of the problem. You might assume a small one can wait, but untreated decay doesn’t stop on its own. It spreads.

Here’s what that process can look like:

Stage 1: Enamel only – At this point, the cavity is small. It can usually be fixed with a simple filling. No pain. No major cost.

Stage 2: Dentin – This is the layer beneath the enamel. You might feel some sensitivity to temperature or sweets. Treatment is still manageable but slightly more involved.

Stage 3: Pulp and nerve – Pain usually starts here. The infection has reached the inner part of the tooth. You may need a root canal or, in some cases, an extraction.

Stage 4: Beyond the tooth – Infection can spread to nearby teeth or even into the jawbone. At this point, the risks are much more serious.

We understand that it can be tempting to wait. But early treatment is almost always easier, less expensive, and better for your long-term health!

What you drink throughout the day affects your teeth more than most people realize.

Some beverages are acidic. Others contain sugars or stain over time. Here's a general guide, starting with the most tooth-friendly options.

Water: The best choice. It rinses away bacteria, hydrates your mouth, and helps balance acidity.

Milk: Low acidity and full of calcium. A good option for both kids and adults.

Herbal teas: Most are gentle on enamel and don’t stain. Just avoid sweetened or citrus-based blends.

Coffee: Not terrible in moderation, but can stain and is slightly acidic. Try rinsing with water after drinking.

Juice: High in natural sugar and acidity. Best consumed with meals rather than as a stand-alone drink.

Soda: Both sugary and acidic, including diet versions. A common cause of enamel erosion. Use a straw if you drink it and rinse with water after.

Energy drinks: Often the worst for enamel. They’re highly acidic and usually packed with sugar or artificial sweeteners.

You don’t have to give up the things you enjoy! Just be aware of what they’re doing to your teeth, and make small changes to protect your enamel. Rinsing with water, using straws, and limiting how long you sip are simple steps that go a long way!

Most people assume dentists are hyper-focused on how white your teeth are. In reality, we’re looking at your overall health and habits, not cosmetic details.

Here are three things we notice first during your appointment:

🦷 Gum health: Redness, puffiness, bleeding, or recession can tell us a lot about your oral hygiene and risk for gum disease. Healthy gums are the foundation of long-term dental health.

🦷 Signs of grinding or clenching: We can often see small fractures in enamel, worn-down teeth, or jaw tension that point to stress-related habits. Many people don’t realize they grind in their sleep until we bring it up.

🦷 Whether or not you flossWe’re not here to scold you. But inflamed gums and tartar between teeth are usually a sign that flossing is inconsistent. Knowing that helps us treat you more effectively.

We’re not here to judge, we’re here to help you keep your mouth healthy and functional!
