YESSSS. Also you don't need to be old or disabled to do chair yoga.
In my Tuesday chair class we have been using two chairs each, it's been revolutionary I say! We have the space and the chairs available, the students are loving it.
Chair yoga is revolutionary because it can make these transformational practices available to a huge population of people who aren’t interested in getting on a mat—and even some that would!
I’m obviously a big proponent of chair yoga, and I spend a lot of my time trying to show people how you can get the same benefits of yoga from chair practice.
One of the biggest hurdles that I see to practicing in a chair is this false idea that if you’re not doing asana on a yoga mat on the floor then you’re not really doing yoga. It’s such a shame, because it really prevents people from practicing.
I’ve even had students who simply refuse to practice in a chair, even though it would be safer for them. (By the way, if that happens I usually have the whole class practice in a chair.)
Democratizing yoga means showing people that the inner work can be done in a chair or anywhere. After all, yoga is really about working with the mind so that we can connect more deeply with our truest self.
So my question is: How can we make chair yoga more available?
