Professionalizing the industry:

I believe in the Continuous Growth Model, which has been a part of my whole life. Yes , I respect I needed to pause completion of my PhD (which I am clear I am a Candidate in), because I needed to be here, in the fight of my life to , and for my family. I could not run a business, and be a mom, with the continued pressures of military life, work, academic studies, and other factors all during a global pandemic!

However, let’s clear up a misconception, it’s not my PhD studies that has built my clinical experience I have today. I have other education and several other degrees, (Graduated and worked as a hairdresser for many years, Bachelors degrees in Social Work, History and Women’s Studies, a Masters in Social Work, and a Masters in Counselling Psychology). I have advanced clinical training in various modalities (ACT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, CPT, ISTDP, Gottman, EFT), and have worked as a clinical supervisor for years. I have studied amongst some of the most amazing professionals to help understand mental health as I do. As reported “a seemingly impressive resume”. Yes CBC, it is. Thank-you.

For a long time, I believed I needed to finish my PhD to be considered smart. Then, I realized, that would be ascribing to a false ideology (the very one you tried to call me out for ), that I could only hold knowledge if I was a “Doctor”. However, I choose my school and the studies not to be a “Dr”, rather because I have a passion. I wanted go deeper into a subject, contributing to a body of knowledge, and learn. Let's not misrepresent that.

I acknowledge I have had so many learning opportunities, access to education, not to mention my whiteness. This is a not everyone has access to. The average person doesn't know the difference in our experience as a Social Worker V Counsellor, V Psychotherapist. Let alone Dr. Which is why I always tried to ensure I was clear in my studies and to ensure they were not misrepresenting my active work.

However when we attack learning, when we cut down other professionals' knowledge, what experiences are we excluding? What are we giving weight to? Who are we forgetting? Whose voices are we invalidating ? The ones doing the actual work. This is NOT about dropping or lowering the standard of professionalization. It is about exploring and creating space for multiple pathways to healing. It is allowing for and . Folks who are at the forefront doing the work because our humans .

Degrees don’t make compassion. I learned so much chair side working with humans. Let's not invalidate life experience. Increasing barriers to care won’t help heal mental health. will. We need more , and . We need to do more to help teach, build each other up, and to each other to do better. .

Let's clear something up.

is NOT government funded, subsidized nor do we receive any sort of outside support. Yet we have given away over 2.5 million dollars in treatment. We have always done this with a wealth distribution approach to and to .

So when other places tout they have offered 88% of treatment "patients did not pay for", this is capturing those who are amazingly receive subsidized beds provided by provincial health authorities, insurance, or other forms of funding. These beds are still funded, even if not direct from consumer.

Nomina does not receive this. Why do we not get this? Because as we are NOT a medical level facility. We have a different scope of care. We do not qualify. We are not trying to do what others do. We are here to help support those who do not fit into the existing models. We are trying to use our platform to help those forgotten, neglected or otherwise rejected by the existing care models to help.

, I hope you have fired your fact checker as they have done a deplorable job.

As clinicians, we often navigate complex emotional landscapes with our clients, especially those in treatment. One of the most empowering tools we can teach is the simple, yet profound, word: “no.”

In the context of addiction, individuals frequently rely on maladaptive coping mechanisms which can perpetuate their struggles. When clients seek behaviors or substances that are part of their destructive patterns, saying “no” can be a complete and necessary answer.

Here’s why:

- **Setting Boundaries:** Saying “no” reinforces personal boundaries, crucial for recovery. It’s an affirmation of self-respect and a step towards healthier decision-making.

- **Interrupting Patterns:** A firm “no” can disrupt the cycle of negative behavior, offering a pause where reflection and healthier choices can begin to take root.

- **Empowerment:** Learning to say “no” empowers clients, giving them control over their actions and, ultimately, their recovery journey. It’s a practice in autonomy and self-governance.

- **Therapeutic Alliance:** In therapy, when we model and support the use of “no”, we strengthen the therapeutic relationship. It shows respect for the client’s journey and trust in their capacity for growth.

As clinicians and centre staff, we normalize “no” as a complete answer in our treatment facilities. It’s not just about refusal; it’s about teaching, healing, and fostering growth.

“Confidentiality in therapy is crucial. It creates a safe space where you can share your deepest thoughts without fear of judgment or exposure. This trust is foundational for effective therapy, allowing genuine healing and growth. When choosing a therapist, ensure they prioritize confidentiality. It’s not just about privacy; it’s about respect, trust, and the effectiveness of your therapeutic journey. ”

Testimonials are unethical in health care settings. Here are 3 reasons why these seemingly benign things don’t belong in health and mental health care:

* Undue influence: Clients may be vulnerable to undue influence, and therapists should avoid actions that could exploit their trust.

* Reliability: Testimonials can be fake, and therapists may include photographs or video recordings that can lead to conflict.

* Goes against the code of conduct: This is against the code of ethics for psychologists, social workers and counselors, as it subjects the client to potential undue influence.

If a mental health practitioner or institution has solicited testimonials on their website, best case scenario is they are fake, and worst case they have been attained unethically.

The 1st of Jan is a time to reflect and then look forward. What tends to work better than a resolution is setting intentions. Things like: I intend to be more present, I intend to take a moment before reacting. These are changes we want to make rather than goals we can’t live up to.
