Stress is an unavoidable part of life. Our bodies have natural mechanisms to help us confront stressful situations. However, if our stress is chronic and unresolvable then these natural mechanisms can disrupt the internal processes that maintain our long-term health.

Acupuncture can help by regulating the nervous system, enabling rest and recovery, and allowing the body to regain a healthy balance that allows us to rise to our day-to-day challenges while maintaining our health over the long-term.

This quote from one of the classic Chinese Medicine texts is a great reminder of the importance of getting adequate downtime in our busy lives. Just as idleness can have negative health impacts, so too can overwork (both mental and physical).

Resting when the time is right will conserve our inner resources so we can pursue opportunities with vigour when they inevitably arise. Trying to accomplish a feat before it is ready to be completed will cause frustration and stress, leading us towards burnout.

Fighting against the natural flow of things is akin to swimming against the current. Despite all of the hard work, you may be going backwards.

Chinese Medicine provides a heuristic approach to health. The principles it promotes gives us rules of thumb to live by that, if followed more often than not, will give us a great chance at long-term health and well-being. While not perfect, it is pragmatic, which is often what we need when presented with the complexities of our modern day life choices. Here-in lies its strength as a preventative medicine that aims to keep you healthy instead of waiting until you are not.

Acupuncturists are trained in a number of therapeutic techniques. These include acupressure, cupping, massage/bodywork (Tui Na), thermal therapy (moxibustion), skin scraping (Gua Sha) and, of course, needling. Each have their own unique effect but there are some overlaps in their use for various conditions. While needles can sometimes be the best tool for the job, there are other options on hand for achieving similar results.

If at any point you have reservations about the use of needles during your treatment, please let your practitioner know. They can discuss with you which other options would be best suited to your treatment goals.

If at any point you have reservations about the use of needles during your treatment, please let your practitioner know. They can discuss with you which other options would be best suited to your treatment goals.

โ€œIโ€™m afraid of needles.โ€ Fear of needles is the number one reason people donโ€™t try acupuncture. While some really do have a phobia of needles, the vast majority of people associate needles with pain. Itโ€™s a valid association; as kids, we quickly learned that getting a shot caused pain.
