Let’s talk Nettle!!
That feared plant of childhood.
That pointy- leaf plant with the hangy bits on top. And that without fail, when exploring the far reaches of the Universe in that little patch of forest behind your house, you would be knee deep in and totally unaware until you suddenly noticed a burning, stinging sensation and realized once again you had wandered into a patch of the dreaded Stinging nettle.
Mom or Dad likely had a sure-fire method of treatment. Perhaps they dabbed on a baking soda paste or laid a cool cloth soaked in vinegar on your burning skin. Possibly you were soothed by the gentle application of the sticky gel of the ever-present aloe vera plant. Or maybe your parent was one of those real earthy-types, and would just reach down and grab mud and splat that over the burning areas.
Whatever method used to cool the burning itch, it was likely one passed down through the generations when all of nature seemed to be medicine.
But did you know that the plant we all learned to avoid as a child, is actually one full of amazing nutritional and medicinal benefits.
Stinging nettle contains vitamins A, C, and K as well as B vitamins. The leaves are rich sources of terpenoids, carotenoids, fatty acids, essential amino acids, chlorophyll, and minerals. They also contain important polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. It is truly packed with nutritional benefits.
The medicinal benefits of Nettle are too lengthy to address in length in this post, but here are just a few that nettle is commonly used for:
